Over 40 Novice contest with a perfect 1-1 tally. Eugene Van Lancker ran his first motocross race in almost 25 years, bringing out his Ossa Phantom to enjoy a seventh-place finish with 7-7 scores. Judging by the size of the grin on his face, it's likely he'll be back, racing more AHRMA motocross events. In Classic 500cc Expert competition, Michael Owens brought his cherry 360cc Husky all the way from San Juan Capistrano, California, to net the National win on a 1-1 score. Dan Johns gave chase on his AJS 410 for second. In the fast Open Age classes, Mackay won the Expert class, while Clark made it a three-class Intermediate sweep with 1-1 finishes and hauling lots of awards home for his Sportsman 250cc, Over 40 and Open Age wins. Some of the best racing of the day was in the Classic classes, which feature machines from the mid-'60s to the early '70s. The 125cc riders worked the sand berms especially well, with the Classic 125cc Intermediates never more than a couple of lengths apart and many lead changes. Tom Male took his Husky 125 to overall victory with 1-1 finishes. Larry Towning, also on a Husky, was second with a 2-2 tally. The Classic 125cc Novices were also racing hard, with three or four riders all leading at various times. In the end, Hodaka jockey Steve Smith won with a 2-1 tally, just edging out a hard-charging Larry Greer (1-2), on a beautiful Rickman-Zundapp. Both riders were trying for their first overall National wins. In Classic 250cc Expert racing, AJS pilot Johns did the winning, while Intermediate Don Baker continued to look good, bringing his AJS 250 home in first, ahead of Richard Anderson, who was riding a fourspeed Husky 250. It was a memorable weekend of action, with competitors from all over the country all enjoying the spirit of AHRMA racing on a great track and riding their vintage MX machines flat out to have - like the AHRMA slogan says - "fun on old wheels"! Miller made up the distance in short time, and at the beginning of lap two she doubled through the rhythm section and literally jumped into the lead. By this time, the rest of the riders had sorted themselves out. ANA Cycle/Kawasaki's Amber Farley was in third, with Kawasaki jockey Alison Jones, Yamaha-mounted Bayless, BelRay-backed Yamaha rider Garrett, Suzuki jockey Philo Petricig, and Kawasaki pilot Jessye Davis close behind. Miller continued to walk away from the field, while Farley and Davis were on the move. Miller held on for the win, with Davis moving through the field to get into second by moto's end. McConnell held on for third, followed by Farley, Jones, Bayless and Garrett. In moto two, McConnell made a clean sweep of the holeshots, taking both for the day. Behind McConnell were Garrett, Miller, Bayless, Farley, Abbie Bardo, Jones and Davis. Bayless went over the bars on the first lap, ending her chances of taking the championship. Miller once again started to move early and by the end of the first lap she had moved to second and was within striking distance of McConnell. Davis was also on the move and found herself in fourth by the end of lap one. Miller swept by McConnell, pulling Garrett along with her, but Garrett couldn't match Miller's pace. Miller appeared to be untouchable until Davis fell into her race mode. Davis was soon in second and was catching Miller. Davis almost made it work, but she ran out of time; she came from way back to finish about a bike length behind Miller at the checkered flag. Miller, with a 1-1 finish, took the overall in her first WML Amateur event. Davis went 2-2 for second. Garrett held on for third, but with a 7-3 score, she would have to settle for fifth on the day. Farley went 4-4 for third, and McConnell went 3-5 for fourth. In the first Mini moto, Yamahamounted Olson made it through the mud first, with Sinisalo/Girl Powerbacked Kawasaki jockey Kocher close behind. Kocher was fast through the wet track and was soon in the lead. Kocher showed why she had the points lead by pulling out to a five-second lead by moto's end, with Olson holding down second and Pro Action-backed Honda pilot Rory Packwood taking third. In moto two, Kocher was the fastest off the line, taking the holeshot and never looking back. Olson was second off the line and kept Kocher honest the entire moto, never letting her get too fa r out front. Packwood was third. The field stayed the same the entire moto, as Kocher went I-Ion the day to take the overall and secure the series championship, Olson went 2-2 for second and second overall in the series, and Packwood went 3-3 for third and claimed third in the series points. eN Steel City Raceway Delmont, Pe1Insylvania Results: September 1, 2001 IRound &IIf &1 AM: 1. WML Bel-Ray MX Championship Series Round &: Steel City Raceway Miller, Kocher Molten in Steel City By STEVEN BONNAU DELMONT, PA, SEPT. 1 he final round of the WML Series was where the titles were going to be decided. Kaide Garrett had a sizable lead in the Amateur class, but it was not insurmountable - one DNF and Denise Bayless could win the championship. In the Mini class, the lead held by Kimberly Kocher was only eight points over second-placed Kayla Olson. Nothing was a certainty; with Olson having won the first moto and T leading Kocher for all but one lap of moto two just one week earlier, the title chase was getting really interesting. When the gate dropped for the first Amateur moto, Fox/One/Yamahabacked Jessica McConnell and CDR/Thor/Kawasaki-backed Cheryl McCullough were side by side going into the muddy first corner, with McConnell getting the edge. The second corner was not as smooth for most, as the majority of the field were involved in a huge pile-up. Tabatha Miller got through clean and found Steel City Raceway: Tabatha Miller was the top Amateur at the sixth and final round of the WMl Bel-Ray MX Championship Series in Delmont, Pennsylvania. cycl. n • _ os • OCTOBER 17, 2001 49
