CMC TransCal MX Series Round 2: Hanford Fairgrounds Boothe finished second in both motos and took second overall. The uneducated observer would have had a hard time distinguishing the 125cc and 250cc Pro races from one another. The 250cc motos looked a lot like those of the smaller bikes. Holland and Boothe got decent starts in each race and quickly worked their way to the front of the pack. Again, Boothe stayed within striking distance, but Holland never left an opening. The final results were the same; Rusty went 1-1 for the win and Boothe went 2-2 for second overall. Beau Baron and Paul Temmerman swapped third- and fourth-place finishes in the two races. Baron got third in the final moto and thus third overalL After spending the summer competing in the Canadian National Series, Holland is on top of his game. Keep your eye out for him once the Arenacross series gets under way. Holland has signed on to ride for the Bill's Pipes Suzuki team - the same team with which Buddy Antunez won five Arena cross championships. eN STORY AND PHOTOS BV EDDIE GRAVELINE/WWW.MOTOPRESS.NET (RIght) Fresh from signing one of the biggest amateur contracts ever, Mike Alessi won every race he entered In convincing fashion at round two of the CMC TransCal MXSeries. (Below) Just because Jeff Alessi Is usually overshadowed by his older brother's success. don't think he's not one of the fastest mini riders in the country. He was runner-up In both the 80cc (12-13) and Supermini classes in Hanford, California. HANFORD,CA,SEPT.9 T he recent deal that saw Mike and Jeff Alessi move to Honda from Yamaha was one of the most publicized amateur motocross contracts of all time. Before the ink was dry, the dynamic brother duo headed north from Southern California to compete in the second round of the CMC TransCal North MX Series in Hanford. Even though the color of their bikes is now different, they quickly learned that some things never change. Along with their father, Tony, Mike and Jeff found themselves in a familiar spot: the center of a controversy. The TransCal series is arguably the largest in the state, and the average round attracts 600 to 700 racers. As usual, round two was host to an enormous crop of 80cc riders. Mike and Jeff were entered in the 80cc (12-13) class, which ran combined with the 80cc (14-16) class, which started first. In both motos, Mike ripped off huge holeshots and set a blistering pace, with Jeff close behind. Within the first few laps, both boys were catching and lapping riders from the 80cc (14-16) class, which had a 30-second head start. In each of the eight-lap motos, Mike caught and passed everyone from the first gate, including the leader. Jeff was also very impressive, passing many of the older riders as well. The speed differential between the Alessis and the rest of the 80cc riders was so great that a lot of grumbling was heard in the pits. Some people didn't think that anyone could go that fast on legal bikes. What really got everyone up in arms was the Supermini class. Once again, Mike and Jeff dominated and ran one-two in both motos. Obviously, a lot of parents were complaining, and the promoter was forced to hold "random" teardown inspections. Guess what: Both Alessi bikes were "randomly" selected for inspection. "No problem," Tony replied when asked beforehand about the inspections. "We don't have anything to hide. I haven't had the bikes long enough to make any modifications, let alone cheat. These bikes are bone stock. The boys are even competing in the Supermini class on stock 80s. I think it's great, because when people see that we're legal, they're going to realize how fast these Hondas are. Honda is going to love this." Both bikes were found to be completely legal for the 85cc class. Mike and Jeff finished first and second, respectively, in the 80cc (12-13) and Supermini classes. Even though everyone in the 80cc (14-16) class was caught and passed by Mike in both motos, there was some good racing. J.L. Bitz made the trip from Reno and rode flawlessly en route to perfect moto scores. Aside from the Alessis, Bitz was never challenged in either moto. In the 80cc (7-11) division, Clovis' Nicolas Baker dominated both motos. Baker has been on a tear for the past few months. He frequently beats riders that are two or more years older than he is, and he's clearly the fastest 10year-old in Central California right now. One of the best things about the TransCal Series is that it usually features full Pro-class gates. This day was no exception, as there was a lot of excitement in the 125cc and 250cc classes. In the 125cc Pro motos, Fresno's Rusty Holland dominated aboard a Clawson Motorsports RM125. Holland was actually beaten to the first turn in both motos, but he scythed his way to the lead on the first lap each time. Once in the lead, Holland put it on cruise control and rode to a pair of mistake-free wins. A couple of seconds back, David Boothe was also riding well. Had Hoiland made as much as one mistake, Boothe would have been sure to capitalize. Unfortunately for the Clovis resident, the opportunity never arose. (Far left) Rusty Holland dominated the action in the Pro classes at the Hanford Fairgrounds. (Left) David Boothe stayed close enough to capitalize on any mistakes Rusty Holland made, but the opportunity never came. 38 OCTOBER 17,2001 • cue •• n • _ so Hanford Failllroundl Hanford, Califomia Results: Sept1lmb.r 9, 2001 [Round 21 so (4·6): I.
