In the Open Two·Hour class, current
points leader Kim Mahncke bested 20 fellow riders to the first corner and never
looked back. KTM-mounted Mahncke
enjoyed the wider terrain and kept his bigbore out front with a comfortable cushion
between himself and the rest of the pack.
The victory topped Mahncke's string of
consistent finishes and left him as the top
rider in the class. Fellow KTM riders filled
in the next two positions. Series rival
James Hom finished a minute and a half
behind the leader. David Vandecar ended
the day in thjrd. Kawasaki·mounted Travis
Krist rode a strong race, finishing fourth.
Longtime District 14 competitor David
Hammel maintained a solid pace, earning
fifth-place honors in this competitive class.

Bersano Remains Hot
By
AARON
BARTH
ROSE CITY, MI, AUG. 26
In Rose City, Ff,S/No Fear Suzuki/Smith/
Lowe Racing/Dunlop-supported Blair Bersano
put in a solid day's effort taking his third overall of the season. The Pinconning resident dr·
culated the 5-mile course mounted on his
practice bike and recorded the overall victory
with more than a minute to spare.
"Today I felt I rode well," stated Bersano.
'The course was really fast today. It was nice
getting another overall."
Bent Wheels MC laid out a course that
consisted of mostly open fields with an occasional section of woods. Bersano took the lead
from the start and never looked back. The
open fields catered to Bersano's aggressive
riding style. Another rider who enjoys riding
on the ragged edge was O'Neal/Boyesen/
WER/Pirelli/Race Tech-backed Aaron Wegner,
who kept his Vamaha 125 at high rpm trying
to match the pace set by Bersano, who was
mounted on a 250.
Wegner's second overall helped hjm gain
points on current points leader Corey Parlin.
Klotz's Parlin's day ended on the second lap,
when he was forced to withdraw from the race
due to mechanical difficulties. The final rider
on the podium was Troy Lee Designs-backed,
Vamaha 426-mounted Chris Gallt. Like
Bersano, Gallt was using this race as a
springboard, preparing himself for the fall
GNCCs. Gailt is currently leading the 200cc A
class in the National Hare Scrambles and
GNCC series.
Grooves Motorsports/Spy/N -Style-supported Bryan Duniap made it another close
race with Lansing Cycle's Corey Calkins. Dunlap seems to have Calkins' number at Rose
City, besting Calkins twice this year by less
than 20 seconds at this facility. The top nonExpert was KDX 200-mounted Michael Stapula, What makes the Smith/Wiseco/
Notul/Engine Ice rider's day spectacular was
that he was mounted on a 1994 Kawasaki.
Stapula rode to a class win in the 200cc class
and eighth overall.
Nelson Heats It Up
By
STEVE lI'IANGJONE
SAN JACINTO, CA, AUG. 26
With temperatures topping 108 degrees, Dana
Nelson heated things up even more and swept
both motos in the Over 38 Expert class at
Competition Park. More than 150 veteran racers from the Over The Hill Gang braved the
heat, and racers and spectators alike searched
for shade and ice-cold beverages to try to fight
off the blazing sun.
In mota one, Jeff Mason, aboard his Varna·
ha, grabbed the holeshot and the early lead,
Suzuki-powered Steve Piattoni was second
around the first comer, followed by the red-hot
Honda of David Fajardo. Mall McBride and
Dan Caneva ballied for the fourth position, It
looked like it was going to be McBride's day
as he charged hard early on the first two laps
to capture second place behind a strong
Mason. McBride's glory was lost when a miscue left him 15 seconds off the leaders.
Halfway through the mota, Nelson worked his
way up to battle for second place. Nelson was
on a mission, and he put pressure on Piattoni
and then took over the number-two spot. With
two laps left, the top three riders freighttrained lIround the track with only three seconds separating them. Approaching the white
flag, Nelson and Mason were side by side over
the big stepdown/double/table section. After
leading every lap of the mota, Mason could
not hold off Nelson as he took the lead. At the
checkered flag, it was Nelson, Mason and
Piattoni. Caneva and Fajardo rounded out the
top five.
In moto two, Mason again grabbed the
holeshot. Jeff Gianni and Caneva battied for
second. Nelson didn't waste any time, quickly
moving into second place by the end of the
second iap. Neison was on edge and cased
the stepdown double after the finish line hard,
which gave Mason a five-second lead over the
hard-charging Nelson. That lead was gone
after one lap, and Nelson again put pressure
on Mason and took over the lead. Piattoni
struggled on the start, but he was in a groove,
slicing through the pack and cutting seconds
off the leaders' time every lap. Each lap, he
picked off another rider. Near the end, Nelson
was leading, Mason was second and Piattoni
was third. Piattoni put the pressure on the
slowing Mason and easily passed him. The
next victim on Piattonj's Jjst was the slowing
Nelson; he stuck his tire in a couple of times,
but he couldn't get a pass to stick. Nelson
took the checkers, with Piattoni a close sec·
and and Gianni filling out the podium.
Exhausted from the scorching heat, Mason
rolled to the finish to take fourth, and McBride
rounded out the top five.
Nelson took overall honors for the day with
a 1·1 score. Piattoni was second via a 3·2
tally, and Mason was third with a 2·4 score.

James held on to his lead for one lap, and
then a hard-charging Phil Rimes made the
pass, bringing Christian Prida with him. Rimes
was up front for the second lap but crashed
out, letting Prida take over the lead on the
third lap.
Meanwhile, Ebers has worked his way
through the pack and past James and into
second place. On the fourth lap, Ebers was in
command, followed closely by Prida, James,
Monjaras and Paul Pederson. There was lillie
change on lap five, except that James
advanced into second and Prida fell back to
third. On the final lap, Ebers stalled his
thumper and James was right there to take
back the lead and take the mota win. Monjaras also moved up. passing Pederson and
Prida for second. Pederson, Prida and Russell
rounded out the top five.
The second·moto holeshot went to Ebers,
followed by Rimes, Monjaras, James and
Prida. Rimes once again was riding excellently
and led for the first two laps, until Ebers got it
together for the pass and the mota win. Monjaras, Prida, Russell and James rounded out
the top five.

Blair - but Which?
By GARY T. OeER
LOS FRESNOS, TX, AUG. 26
The largest gate of the day was the 125cc
Beginner class, with II riders ready to rumble
for that sacred piece of plastic. Suzuki-mounted Brandon Blair pulled the first-mota
holeshot, followed closely by Ivan Zarazua,
Jesse Pena and Clifton Blair. Brandon was up
front for three laps, but then he got zapped by
his brother Clifton for the mota win. Brandon
finished second, with B.J. Shields, David
"Never Say Die" Petta, and Vamaha-mounted
Nee Granados rounding out the top five.
The second mota's battle for first was
between Blake Russell and KTM rider Zarazua;
larazua only ied for only two laps before giving
the lead to the Suzuki of Harlingen-backed Russell, who pulled away for the second-mota victory, followed by larazua, Clifton Blair, Shields
and Petta. If not for crashes in the first mota,
both Russell and Petta would have done better.
Due to a small turnout, the Open class was
mixed in with the Over 30 Intermediate class.
When the gate dropped, Brownsville Sports
Center Honda-backed Dustin James, on his
2002 CRI25, nailed the holeshot, followed by
Suzuki/KTM of McAllen's Bryan Monjaras, Bill
Russell and Ian Esmay. Joe Bob Ebers was
looking for the holeshot but suddenly crashed
his KTM 520 letting, James by to his inside.
