Young Jared McKay nearly picked off his
first 600cc-c1ass win. The 15-year-old rider
from Neoga flew his dad's KX500 over on his
first ride in 4.100 seconds and was sitting on
the lead 8t intermission. In the second round.
however, the district points leader, Fortner,
burst McKay's bubble with a blistering 3.945second ride on his CR500. To his credit,
young McKay responded well, flying his KX
over on his second round under four seconds
also, but falling just short of the win with a
3.963-second time. He has definitely established himself as one of the top riders in the
class. Goodman also broke into the threes, his
3.969-second run eaming him third.

Hudnall Hauls at
AES Hare Scrambles
By BILL HANKS
NEW PHILADELPHIA, OH, SEPT. 2
GNCC fast guy Bobby Hudnall sailed to the Aclass overall victory at the Action Extreme
Sports-sponsored hare scrambles in New
Philadelphia, site of round four of the AMA
District 12 Series. The 4.5-mile track consisted of rocky uphills, steep downhills, tricky offcamber sections, fast open trails, and parts of
the Broken Spokes motocross track.
Hudnall, riding his Andrews Cycle/FCR
Suspension/GPR Stabilizers/Factory Effects/
No Toil Suzuki RM250, soon had a comfortable lead. At one point near the end of the
race, he even decided to try to cross a ditch
that the track had been routed around,
marked off by banners.
The small but talented field consisted of
several Ohio-based GNCC riders; all of whom
ran at the front of their respective classes.
In Over 40 action, Glenn Mears and Robin
Miller took their battle for second (behind
class leader Mark Mihalik) down to the last
lap. When Mears got caught behind a couple
of lappers, Miller seized the opportunity, riding
past the slowed group on a slick off-camber
section to gamer second place.
The overall victory in the trophy classes
went to Yamaha YZ125-mounted Mark
McGrath, while brothers Tom and Randy Carpenter, on their RM 125s, captured first and
second, respectively, in the 200cc class. The
Open Bike class was all Jeff Smith's, riding
his rapid KTM.
Adding some international flavor to the
event was Husaberg employee Michael Hedstrom from Askersund, Sweden, who is spending the summer in the United States. Hedstrom garnered second place in the
Four-Stroke class.
In the morning's Mini action, KX80-mounted Dustin Fretaig, riding in only his second
hare scrambles, took to the woods as if he's
been doing it all along. The 2000 District 12
Super and Senior Mini motocross champ put
on a jumping clinic on the motocross portion
of the track, and he just flat hauled through
the rest of the course, winning by one minute
and 20 seconds over the rest of the Mini field~
On a lighter note, the Ironman Award goes
to the unidentified drumbrake Maico rider who,
after two hours of pounding on this rough
course and within sight of the checkered flag,
jumped the last double on the motocross track
