Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series Round 7: River Bottom Hare Scrambles Greer Spanks the River Bottom Bv On the third lap, Greer got crossrutted in a slippery mudhole, but he recovered quickly to keep the lead and take the overall win at the scoring tent. Edmondson came through the finish in second and Handy took third. The 200cc A race was a battle between Tommy Ashley and Brian Morgan. In the beginning, Morgan set up a lead until Ashley found a line around Morgan in a deep mudhole. Ashley was working on getting Morgan off of his rear fender when he hit a turn too fast and found a pile of barbed wire on the other side. Morgan took the lead while Ashley pulled barbed wire out of his helmet. Morgan had stretched out a 48-eight second lead going into the last lap, when his rear fender slipped out from under him on an off-camber. By the time Morgan was up and going, Ashley had caught up to him. The two riders engaged in a "bar-banging game of chicken" on a fast fire road. Ashhey's shoulder made contact with Morgan's handlebars, throwing Morgan off bal- HEATHER GREER DANVllLE,VA,AUG.26 fter a two-month break, riders were looking forward to the seventh round of the Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series. However, racing in August means dealing with the hot summer weather. The 9mile track had a wide variety of challenges, including a tough creek crossing, long off-cambers, and dusty field sections. For the first time in the series, a computer display showed each rider their position and how much time they needed to make up to catch the leader. Jason Greer led the AA pack across the field and into the woods off of the start. Stephen Edmondson was right on Greer's rear fender going into the first checkpoint, but waiting for a hole-punch cost Edmondson a few seconds. Greer set a blistering pace and stretched out a minute lead by the end of the first lap. Although he was last off of· line, Tommy Handy made his way through the pack to chase after Greer and Edmondson. Ashley took the lead and cinched the win. Morgan came in right behind him for second. During the entire race, Chris Cooper was gunning for second but came in third. Ashley Hall took the 250cc A holeshot, with Travis Jones right on his rear wheel. Widening the gap between himself and Jones by four minutes, Hall kept the lead and took the win. Jones was second, with Larry Trent third. Justin Stone led the Four-Stroke A class into the woods. By the end of the first lap, Danny Morrison had taken the lead, with Mike Capewell and Stone freight-training behind him. Morrison rode a nearly perfect race and took the win. Capewell and Stone got hung up on a nasty, slimy embankment at the creek crossing, giving Robert Wagner the opportunity to get by them and take second. Stone was third. The Vet A class was led by Craig Randle off of the start. Mike Mcintire took the lead by the second lap but slid out on an off-camber, and Montie Orr took a higher line and the lead. By the third lap, Mcintire was out of the race with bike trouble. Meanwhile, the battle for second was between Randle, Phillip Doyle and Mike Bakken; Randle came in second. Bakken passed Doyle for third. So far this season, the Senior A class has been dominated by Don Hall, and River Bottom was no exception. Hall passed holeshot leader Darrell Harley when Harley went around a downed tree that Hall bounced over. Hall hit a root and ricocheted off some trees, putting a small dent in his 8-minute lead over second-placed Gil Griggs, who had powered by Harley on a shorter line up a hill. By the end of lap three, Harley found a hole in his case, putting him out of the race and giving Yamaha rider Ernie Hostetler third. In the Vet B class, Ralph Benhart took the holeshot. Benhart's lead came to a sudden end when a slower rider .crashed in front of him, taking him out and opening the door for Rick Huffman, who took the lead. Huffman pulled away for the win. Meanwhile, Michael Lewis and Craig Proffitt battled with Benhart for second. Halfway through the race, Lewis blew past Proffitt in a field section to take third. Proffitt found Lewis downed by a tree and got by him to chase Benhart. Both Proffitt and Lewis passed Benhart on the last mile of the last lap to take 5econd and third. R.J. Fergu50n continued his domination of the Supermini class. Ferguson blew past the pack off the start and never looked back, taking the win. Jeffrey Parker got by Chris Sobrito when Sobrito wrapped himself around a tree. Parker took second and Sobrito recovered for third.
