I four. Joyce dived under the leader in the fast turn-three sweeper to take the point. Shockley stayed close for a few laps but faded to a 10-length deficit at the finish. William Harding took his Bare Minimum Racing Yamaha to a distant third. Mark Morrow, on his MRA RZ350. ran away with the Vintage Five win over teammate Rick Guirey and Page. In Vintage Three, Joyce. on his 750cc Triumph, took his second win of the day. over Gruhn and Mark Mitchell. CN up his ACCO Products Yamaha 250cc two-stroke on the very last row of the very large grid, which also included the Vintage Four racers. He seemed to be on a rail as he shot up the inside to grab third overall by tum two. Not only was he ahead of his Vintage Two class, he was ahead of most the 750s in Vintage Four. As Merhar checked out, the battle for second place was fierce between Breckon, Cook and Mike Schulte. Breckon had the point over Schulte by a bike length, with Cook hot on their heels. As the trio exited tum one on lap two, Schulte disappeared in a big cloud of dust as he ran out of track, going down hard. He was okay but out of the race. A startled Cook lost a little ground but recovered to reel in Breckon and take second, behind Merhar. D&D Cycles' Triumph rider Tim Joyce and "Fast" Frank Shockley. on the Touring Sport BMW-sponsored Triumph, blasted off the line in Vintage Four. As usual. Shockley grabbed the early lead. with Joyce right on his rear tire. Joyce stayed there for three laps as he tried to get under Shockley in the two 90s on lap two but couldn't make it work. MXWest Nevada State Championship Series Round 4: fernley International Raceway Horttor Hones His Skills Bv ROBERT BEAUPRE FERNLEY, NV.AUG. 26 s a haze from nearby wildfires settled into the town of Fernley, Yamaha-mounted Norman Horttor claimed the 125cc Beginner divisionone victory at the fourth round of the MXWest Nevada State Championship Series. Just like the week prior, high temperatures had racers sweating on the line - this time, perhaps none more so than the sizable 125cc Beginner fields (two divisions' worth), who shared the knowledge that they would all soon be vying for ground in the high-speed right-hander at the end of the start straight. In the first division-one moto. Suzuki rider Evan Wright grabbed the holeshot and the lead, with Horttor following closely in second. The Honda of Darren Dines occupied the third spot. but it wasn't long before Wright and Horttor began putting distance on the field in their battle for the lead. Horttor found his way in front of Wright before the end of the first lap. but Wright refused to drop off the pace; he continued a close pursuit of Horttor until the fourth lap. when he made his move into the lead. A 70 OCTOBER 10. 2001 • cue I _ Once out front, however. it was Wright's turn to be pushed. Horttor kept up the pressure. just as Wright had done to him the three laps before. but it still wasn't enough to remove Wright from the top spot before the checkers. Horttor finished a close second. with Dines finishing out a lonely race in third_ The second moto had another Suzuki pilot. Cory Asalos. pulling to the front. with Dines in second. Wright in third and Horttor in fourth - but this time, Horttor decided that he'd had enough of following Wright and made his move into third before the first lap was complete. On the second lap. Asalos went down, handing the lead to Dines. Horttor was quick to seize his opportunity and once again assume the lead. moving past Dines. Wright immediately recognized that this was Horttor's chance to split. and he also pushed his way past Dines not long after. The second moto began to take on the look of the first, with Horttor and Wright fighting it out at the front. but just as things were starting to get interesting. Wright went down in a sandy corner. leaving Horttor comfortably out front. Horttor claimed the victory. and Dines held off the remounted Wright on the last lap to score second n __ s on the moto. Fourth went to Yamaha rider Jeremy Rials. with fifth being claimed by early leader Asalos after his early-moto mishap. His 2-1 moto scores were good enough for Horttor to post the overall win, while Wright's 1-3 tally brought him second_ Dines' consistency netted him third overall with a 3-2 tally. The first Over 25 Intermediate moto's first-corner carnage claimed Yamaha-mounted Darren Sturgeon and Suzuki rider Chris Ponsock; Ponsock spun out after coming in too hot, leaving nowhere for Sturgeon to go except for over the bars. This allowed Yamaha riders Paul Frieze and Gary Morrill to make a break and claim the first and second spots. respectively. Sturgeon remounted to post third. The second-moto start proved kinder to Sturgeon, who scored the hoieshot over Frieze and Morrill. Sturgeon and Frieze established a lead over Morrill and began their own personal race for the point. Frieze trailed Sturgeon until the second lap, when he found himself on the ground. In the time it took him to get restarted. Sturgeon grabbed a sizable lead and Morrill snagged the second spot by about 10 seconds_ Down but not out, Frieze remounted and went after Morrill. The point of interest was now this: A 3-1 moto score for Sturgeon would only be good enough for victory if Frieze finished the moto worse than second. In fact, a 1-3 score for Frieze would only be worth third overall. while a 1-2 would be good enough for the win. Could Frieze catch Morrill to make the pass that would make the difference between third and first? On the second-to-last lap, Frieze cut the gap between himself and Morrill by five seconds. leaving him just four seconds behind on the turn of the last lap. Sturgeon looked like a sure winner in the moto. but his overall fate was to be decided by the men behind him. Frieze did succeed in closing the gap to Morrill's rear fender by the last turn, but he fell just short of making his move. The overall was then decided. as Sturgeon's 3-1 score claimed the victory. with Morrill's consistent 2-2 scores placing him second. Frieze's admirable attempt put him in the third slot on the day. _ FerlIIey IntI!nIatiaaaJ IlKewIlY Femley, Nevada Resu/ls: lulast ZI, Zaol lllellllll 41 WMN: 1. Kelly Mensefle (5uz); 2.
