AMA/yamaha Western Four-Stroke National Motocross Series Round 9: Thunder Valley MX By Up front, Woods motored to the win. Walters was a man possessed, however, as he diced his way up to finish second. Sandell put an incredible elbowto-elbow pass on Terlecki with one lap remaining for third. Dirt Bike lV.com's Blake Hughes caught it all on video, with some fine event footage. Terlecki finished a close fourth. In moto two, Beatty was second out of the gate, with Walters third. Walters railed around Beatty and then Terlecki before the green flag. He took off and never was headed again. Woods dogged Terlecki lap after lap, and they were never more than 20 feet apart. On lap seven, Terlecki washed past the finish-line area and Woods ran right into his swingarm. Woods went over the bars and almost landed on his feet after a flip in the air. Terlecki's bike stopped running in the interim, but Woods was up and going within a few seconds. Only Beatty and Andy Atkins got by before Woods got going again. Beatty was in second place again, and he held it as Woods worked his way back up and watched Atkins crash right in front of him. Woods then worked hard and got past Beatty on lap 13 of another 16-lap race. At the checkers, it was Walters and Woods, with Beatty, Sandell and Kellogg in tow. CN DON SCHNEIDER PHOTOS BY ROCKY PACE LAKEWOOD,CO,AUG.19 ational number two, Spud Walters, who rides for White Brothers and Yamaha USA, exchanged moto wins and captured his fifth overall victory in the AMAfYamaha Western Four-Stroke National Motocross Series at Thunder Valley MX with a 2-1 punch over fellow Yamaha Powerhouse rider Nathan Woods, who went 1-2. With Walters' feat, the National Championship points chase is within four points, 360 to 356, with Woods in second. The event, which was promoted by David Clabaugh, drew approximately 5500 attendees, who watched with great enthusiasm. Third overall went to Kip Sandell with a 3-4 finish - an incredible task for the Pro Vans/Big Gun Exhaust rider, who was on a borrowed Yamaha YZ426F. As if that wasnit enough, he was involved in a second-moto, first-turn crash with Colorado Motorsports' Josh Kellogg, and they came from dead last to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, in the moto. ALF Racing/Moto Pro/Thorbacked Tim Beatty finished in fourth overall with a spectacular 6-3 score. Beatty put in his best ride of the series in moto two, running second for seven laps. Kellogg finished in fifth overall with a hard-earned seventh in moto one and his great comefrom-behind ride in moto two. Ryan Terlecki. pulled both holeshots on the day, riding the Husaberg FC550. Husaberg USA/Spectro/Nu- Tec Racing Fuels' Terlecki was faster up the huge uphills than anyone. Walters was determined, though, and mounted a most impressive comeback ride, with John Anderson of White Brothers Racing giving pit-board signals on every lap. LaMastus used his electric start and took off third aboard his Beaudry Motorsports KTM 520 EXE. By the time the pack was a third of the way around the track, Downs was turnin' and burnin'. As LaMastus and Downs picked through riders, it was easy to see that Downs was coming on like gangbusters. They passed some pretty high-profile riders in their quest to the front, including Derek Currie, Chris Loredo, Brian Sharp, Nathan Goetz, Schoneck, Ryan Mortensen, Bryan Penney, Rory Sullivan, Derek Mahoney, James Reimer, Alan Angelopulos and Brennan Baptista. Downs caught and passed LaMastus on lap 13 of 16 and then motored past Brian Sweany and Reimer before the checkers. Downs crossed the checkers in ninth and LaMastus in 11 tho Sweany separated the two at the checkers.
