Florida Gold Cup Series Round 1 : Gatorback Cy e Park for an opening. The third lap saw Bernier take over the lead coming down the drop-off into The Pit, with Rosete on his heels, looking to recover what was his. The battle ensued between Bernier and Rosete, as Williams continued his charge, beginning to close in on second. The top three held a 20-second lead over fourth. Coming around for the last lap, Rosete disappeared into The Pit, and didn't emerge for some time. That gave second to Williams and third to Reidel, with the win going to Bernier. Heading into the 125cc C main, Ryan Luke grabbed the holeshot, with Jon Camp and Dean Dyess next in line. Bernier, right behind Dyess, immediately began looking for the pass. Heading into the third lap, the top five were the same until the back sweeper, where Bernier and Camp made their move to pass Luke on the outside, with Bernier becoming the leader. Luke tried to hold third, but Dyess was too strong, pushing at every possible location. Dyess cleared the tabletop, and Luke did not, thus handing third to Dyess. Bernier took the win, and would later pull out the I-I in the 250cc/500cc C class for two overall wins on the day. The ]25cc A & B classes were run together, with Robert Farnell and Drew Kain rising up to become the respective winners. Farnell had an unbelievable day, taking the I-I in the 125cc A, 125cc Pro and 250cc/500cc Pro classes. "I concentrate on the starts," Farnell said. "A good holeshot is the most important, which keeps me out of the roost and able to focus on my race only. Charge hard the whole race, and [see] how far can I pull the lead is what I tell myself." The 85cc (12-13)/(14-]5) classes were run together to offer a full gate. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DIANA TAGGART GAINESVILLE, FL, SEPT. 16 he first round of The Florida Gold Cup Series was shrouded by the effects of the terrorist attacks on America and the weather system called Gabrielle, which left the question, "Should we race or not?" Promoters Linda and Jerry West of Unlimited Sports decided this is a time to be with family - the motocross family that came together, with a turnout of 499 entries for the day. That day began with Cullen Walker from MXers for Jesus calling for a moment of silence and offering a beautiful prayer for the victims and families of the terrorist attacks and for the racers' safety. The ]25cc C class was packed with 52 racers, forcing the use of qualifying races to the main. This action-packed class had many twists and turns, with Bradley Bernier and Dean Dyess emerging as the victors of the two qualifying rounds, and with Bernier taking a ]-] tally for the overall win for the day. After going down in his qualifier, Blake Koch easily held on to the lead in the consolation round. The second round of 125cc C qualifiers began with Jason Rosete in the lead, but coming around the stepoff, Bernier passed him to take the first position. Rosete, however, retook the lead around the next corner. Larry Reidel held the third position on this first lap, with Chase Livingston and James Williams in tow. Bernier came on strong behind Rosete as they headed toward the elevator jump, with Williams taking over third from Reidel. Heading through the back sweeper turn, Bernier was right on Rosete, waiting T 34 OCTOBER 3, 2001 • cue I • n • _ s Kyle Meeks gained the holeshot, with Kyle Chisholm and Matt Goerke close behind him. Chisholm passed Meeks down through The Pit to claim first. Goerke's bike then seized on the uphill run to the back, putting him out of the moto. With Goerke out, Matt Boni wasted no time in passing Meeks to hold onto second, leaving third to Meeks, with Matt Lee, Chase Revell and Brent Carden all· together, battling it out for the next positions. By the second lap, Chisholm had a five-second lead over Boni, both of them pulling away from third. Meeks then crashed, with Revell taking over third. Meeks recovered quickly to hold fourth. By the third lap, Chisolm had upped his lead to seven seconds over Boni, who was holding his own with no challenges from behind. Chisholm, in his determination to improve each lap, pulled out a ] O-second lead by (Above) Robert Farnell (far left) dives to the inside line during one of the 125cc Pro motos In the Gold Cup Series opener at Gatorback Cycle Park. Chisholm overalled both the 85cc (12-13) and Supermini classes. the final lap, despite weaving his way through lapped riders. In the second moto, Goerke took the holeshot on his BSY Yamaha and never looked back. Chisholm, Boni, Revell and Meeks were again battling for position, but this time that order remained the same, with Goerke taking the moto win. Chisholm, however, went I-I in the 85cc (12-13) class, with Boni taking the 2-2 for the day in the 85cc (12-13) class. The Supermini (12-15) class played out with Chisholm taking the holeshot in both motos, not wavering for one second and going I-I for the day. The 65cc (7 -9) and (10-11) classes were interesting, as Taylor Johnson, of Hamilton, Georgia, ran away with the ] 0-11 class, taking a 1-] tally for the overall. In the first moto, Johnson took the holeshot, and Lucas Crespi came up on the outside on the back sweeper to take over second, with Justin Hall, Tyler Moore and Cody Cleveland in close. Johnson and Crespi began to pull away from the pack by the start of the second lap, with Cleveland looking for an opening that would get him past Moore. Johnson continued to improve his lead by two to three seconds each lap, with Crespi pushing it hard to catch up, but to no avail. Cleveland, in his efforts to gain position, hit the back wheel of Moore as they come up out of The Pit. He was still able to keep it going, but the collision slowed him down. Out of nowhere, Michael McArthur and Derek Hall appeared on the scene, passing Cleveland on the back sweeper turn and taking over fifth and sixth positions. Johnson and Crespi ran first and second, respectively (battling in the 10-11 class), with J. Hall, Moore, McArthur and D. Hall in third through sixth (battling in the the 7-9 class). As they moved into the last lap for
