(Left) Watts' friend and fellow Auasie Brad "Wonka" Wllliscroft surprised man)' b)' borrowing Watts' backup bike and finishing a strong second overall. (Right) Brian Gamlhan used a late-race surge to secure fourth overall. Suzuki rider Blair Bersano, who would have had an uneventful finish in sixth place, had to stop in the pits on the last lap to change his air filter, leaving the door open for the hardcharging Levian to take sixth place. Bersano was able to get back on his bike and finish in seventh, followed by Brandon Forrester arid Paul Whibley. Completing the top 10 was Bobby Duncan. Though Watts' championship hopes were crushed with Andrews' podium finish, the Aussie was all smiles after the event. "My KTM was unreal today," he said. "I had a great time. The course today was real good; it was just a pity about all the dust the other riders had to' ride through, but that can't be controlled. I would love to come back here and ride when it's wet." As for the runner-up, Williscroft was also quite jovial, saying "I came over here on holiday for a month to chase women. Shane lent me a bike, so I gave it a shot. Second's not bad, . ey, mate?" After thanking his mechanic, parents, wife, twin boys, sponsors, and even his dog, the new champ confessed, "The thing I like best about off-road racing compared to motocross is it is more of a family affair. It really means a lot to me to have my family at the races. They all help out in the pits, and it makes my job of winning championships that much easier. .. 1 love racing here when this place is wet, it's really hard to beat. I'm always excited when I get to ride here in Park Hills." CN Lad Belt H . Scrambles . httl Hills, Missouri llaults: September 16, 2081 O/A: I. Shone Watts (KTM); 2. Brad Williscroft (KTM); 3. BRIEFLY••• St. Joe's State Park is Missouri's second-largest park. and its 8561 acres of land (2500 desig· nated for OHV use) was donated to the state in 1976 by St. Joe Minerals Co. The promiting Missouri Mudders club gave special thanks to the park's superintendent, Bill Bonnell. whose help was Instrumental in the event's success. The city of St. Joe is located In the heart of southeast Missouri's Lead Belt, where much of the nation's lead ore was extracted from deep mines beneath the park for nearty half a century. The trails of the park wind through wooden portions of the park and 800 acres of the sand Hats that were created from the residue of the milling process. The Missouri Mudders, who put on this event. also organize the Leroy Winters ISOT/ISOE tribute ride at St. Joe's on October 27-28. This year. such Six Days veterans as Dick Burelson and Malcolm Smith are scheduled to attend, along with many others. Team KTM's Patrick Garrahan joked at the Lead Belt that he may have a new profession following a tum of events at the recent ISDE In Berive, France.
