New Hampshire International Speedway II 2001 Williams couldn't improve on his first-round time and finished seventh. Strank had banged himself up in the 540cc round, and he overshot a jump on his ~econd run, but his previous run netted him second place. "We'll take second today," Strank said. "We're riding for the championship and this helps." Russ VanderVeen had problems on his first run, but he nailed a great run on his second pass on the Indianapolis Southside Harley-Davidson & Buell-backed XR750. He rode on the right side and battled his way through the ruts and stayed on-line over the double. A smooth landing and a quick sprint to the timers landed him his first podium in four years with a 3.493-second pass for third. "I've been really unlucky here, but I've always liked this hill," VanderVeen said. "The bike hooked up out of the hole and was straight over the jump, so I nailed it and it turned out great." Thomas wasn't able to catch VanderVeen and had to settle for fourth ahead of Anthony DeHart's 3.559second first-round time on the Kawasaki Triple. Kreeger was the last rider with a shot at beating Templeton, but he got crossrutted on the face of the double and had to roll out of it, securing Templeton's winning streak at Middlebury. "When I first came out on the circuit, this hill scared me and I hated it," Templeton said, "now it's my favorite hill, and the bike works great here. This helps our momentum for the last two races as we try to catch Tiger [Strank] and Jeff [Thomas]." _ Goshen Iran HDrSemen MDlDn:ycle Club Middlebury, Indiana Results: September 18, 2001 80Qcc: 1. If you replace only the rear tire, the improved grip of a new rear may overpower the reduced grip of the worn front, and you may go down in a corner. Replace race tires as a same brand, matched set. That assures , . . . - - - - - - - - , the front and rear tire shape and grip are balanced and they are compatible under race conditions. Race tires may not be worn out by measurement of tread depth but by grip fatigue. Race tire grip fatigues with the heat cycles and high temperature extremes. To stay up in the corners, the grip of the front must always be more than the grip of the rear. Last weeks set of race tires should become this week's practice set. . 2.•Are tire warmers necessary.· If you want instant race grip from the moment the green flag drops, yes. First, set your tire pressures cold, then turn on the tire warmers 15 minutes before you go to pre-grid. Careful, if you hav,e to wait a long time at pre-grid, those tires are cooling down while you wait. Same in a red flag condition. While you wait '--"=""------"----' for the track to be cleaned up, your tires are eooiing! Don't forget that at the restart, as you head into Turn One. Cold front tires can cause sudden soil samples.
