'7 Riding Suit: Tired of seeing their customers go elsewhere for it. many motorcycle manufacturers have jumped into the apparel business. Companies such as Harley. Davidson, Ducati, Triumph and BMW all have extensive apparel lines. BMW's Riders' Apparel division is one of the most complete lines in the industry, and they are committed to setting new standards for motorcycle riding gear. BMW takes great pride in developing and applying new fabrics and technologies to their products. Many of the fabrics that are used in BMW riding gear are light-years ahead of other manufacturers' offerings. Beyond the basic leather and Cordura, they have utilized many newer fabrics such as Dynatec, InoTex, AirTex. F1exothane, ComforTemp, Venturi, and GoreTex. We don't have space to go into the specific properties of all these fabrics. but BMW uses combinations of these to create durable, protective, practi· cal, stylish riding gear. Besides their textile line, they also have a full range of leather riding gear for the traditionalist, and even the new waterproof Nubuckleather Atlantis suit, for the leather avant·garde. For this trip, BMW provided Karen with their Summer Coverall suit, made of Cordura 500 fabric. The coverall suit is designed to fit over street clothes so it can be easily shed when not on the bike. The suit fea· tures zipper· vented sleeves and front pockets that act as vents, combined with a mesh inner liner for maxi- mum airflow. The suit features removable CEapproved body armor in the shoulders, elbows, knees, hips and back. An optional liner for cooler/wet conditions was provided, but considering the time of year we were traveling, it didn't even make the cut while we were packing. Karen was happy with the performance and comfort of the suit, for the most part. One of her complaints was that the collar wasn't lined with something over the raw Cordura, which subsequently became annoying after rubbing her neck all day. The only other complaint was that the armor for the knees began to dig in after a while. Other than those two minor annoyances, the suit functioned perfectly in a variety of weather conditions, and Karen was com· pletely comfortable. Karen's boots were also from BMW's apparel catalog. The Biker boots are made with a combination of leather and Cordura, which is backed by a material called Venturi that makes them a perfect choice for all types of riding conditions. They feature added protection in the ankle and shin. In the same theme as the suit, BMW provided their Indian Summer glove, which is made of a combination of goatskin and Cordura for maximum comfort and protection. The inner liner is made out of Gore-Tex, making the glove wind- and water-resistant. Helmet: Shoei was nice enough to provide Karen with their all-new Z·Two helmet. The Z-Two features a new Hybrid Laminate design, using a special blend of super-high-strength, high·elastic·modulus fibers. The spoiler.shaped tail area is designed to reduce turbulence at high speeds. The Z·Two is very comfortable and quiet, and features a fully detachable, washable inner liner. The new liner is said to reduce pressure points on your noggin, while still providing a finm fit. The Z-Two is available in 11 solid colors and J 2 with graphics and multiple colors.
