Briggs and Stratten Motorplex Altmann Motards to Win By GORDON LUNDE ELKHART LAKE. WI, AUG. 12 John NUnann won the inaugural Superbikers2 event at Road America's new Briggs and Stratten Motorplex. Thjs new go-kart tracktumed-supermotard leyout for the day was applauded by the riders as one of the most fun tracks they have ever ridden. It is sure to bring smiles to many more faces in the future. Altmann rode his Fuel Cafe/A&E Services/SB Construction/Hughes Industriessponsored KTM to victory in the first heat race. His pass for the lead didn't come until lap seven of the eight-lap race. Mitch Hansen, owner of the HMC Ducati factory road race team. borrowed AMA superbike racer Andy Meklau's 610cc Husky and spent e rare day off riding to victory in the second heat race. Almost the entire HMC/Corse Superbike crew, including Slick Bass, Charly Putz and Mark Sutton. came along to lend technical and moral support. giving an international flavor to the paddock. Honda-mounted Steve Reinke led every lap in the C final, taking the victory over Husky rider Shane Meyers. In the A main, Jeff Gesvain jumped out front on his KTM and led the first two laps, with Hansen and Altmann in hot pursuit. Hansen made his pass for the lead in the sweeping tum·one section of the course, and Altmann made his move for second in tum four. Hansen led the next five laps, with Altmann right on him. Altmann tried several passes, but the tight. 11-tum. three-quartermile track offered little passing room. and Hansen was not leaving any doors open. Alt~ mann finally made his move in turn two - a very tight, almost switchback tum_ ·1 figured if I could get a wheel on him going in, even if I blew the comer and just got by. there would be no room for him to get back past me again." Altmann said. The strategy worked, and Altmann led the rest of the way home. The battle for second was then between Hansen and Ben Carlson, aboard his First Concrete Cutter/Mid-Cities Motorsports/Glenn Curtiss-sponsored Kawasaki. Carlson made a valiant attempt to get by in tum six on lap seven, but Hansen was having no part of it. Altmann now had a comfortable lead and cruised to the win. as the battle behind him heated up. Carlson tried many different lines to get by Hansen but couldn't find a hole until the penultimate lap. Carlson dived inside Hansen into the tight turn two and finally made the pass stick for second place. R••ults HEAT 1: 1. John Altmann (KTM): 2..kIf Oesvoln (KT"'); 3. ~ Carlson (Kaw): 4.
