AMAIProgl"essive Insu...ance U.S. Flat T ...ack Championships Round 1 9: Ver-non Downs sports rider won his fourth SuperTracker main of the year. Series points leader Bryan Bigelow led the first five laps on his Lancaster Harley-Davidson/Randy Texter-sponsored Buell. Custom Chrome/American Suspension's Gary Rogers was a close second and took over the lead on lap six. Coolbeth also slipped by Bigelow's Buell, while Rogers was having his best outing of the year. "It's about time everything was working right," Rogers said. "We got it dialed in at Springfield last week, and I was really looking forward to riding it here. I know I can do good on a cushion." Cool beth shadowed Rogers for three laps, then took command. "I was just following those guys the first few laps," said Coolbeth. "Then I started using my head - 'What are you doing following these guys?' I (LefQ Canadian champion Steve Beattie (26) ran well early In the main event, once again proving that he Is capable of running with the best of them. Unfortunately for Beattie, he slipped off the groove and dropped back to seventh. (Below) Aaron Creamer (64U) made his Grand National feature debut at Vernon Downs. Creamer finished last In the main event, but he did finish. Lancaster Harley-Davidson/Dodge Brothers' Mike Hacker rounded out the top 10. "It was a bad deal - you couldn't see anything," Hacker said. "I'm sure the guys up front were all right, but back where we were, it was like riding blind. I haven't been anywhere where you couldn't see anything like that, but everybody made it through safe. I tried to ride the high line, but I couldn't ride there. I just settled down on the groove and tried to make the best of what I could. I guess I wouldn't have had that problem if I'd have got out my heat and had a better starting position." Performance Harley-Davidson of Syracuse/Performance Racing's Chris Hart was 11 th, ahead of Corbin Motors/Samson's Nicky Hayden. Hayden had been as high as fourth early in the race. "I was fourth at the red flag, and we decided to change the tire, but I don't know, I just made a lot of mistakes tonight," Hayden said. "No excuses really, I felt so good in my scratch heat and heat races. The track changed a lot between the heat and the main, but that's no excuse - I just did a poor job of riding in the National. I just kept working my way backward. It was frustrating." Ithaca Motorcycle Works/Cayuga Tool £, Die's Shawn Clark made his New York fans happy as he finished 13th. Custom Chrome/American Suspension's Gary Rogers was 14th. 22 SEPTEMBER 19,2001 • cue "It was really bad in the National; I was probably last off the line," Rogers said. "Halfway down the back straight I had to roll out; I couldn't see the corner because of the guys in front of me. The whole race you had to space yourself out, then you could start running. A couple of times I was knocking the white pylons down." It was a very disappointing night for Saddlemen/National Cyclebacked Kevin Atherton. "We had electrical problems all night, but kept on struggling," Atherton said. "You couldn't see anything. I almost pulled off a couple of times. I really don't need these kind of tracks." CTS/Motorcyclist Post/Torco's Aaron Creamer was the last rider across the line, but there was still reason for celebration. "My first National, it's just great," Creamer said. "In the semi, I felt that I couldn't pass on the groove, but I was able to run in high on the cushion, then cross down to the groove, and that let me get them." The line that had served him well in the semi failed to materialize in the main. SUPERTRAPP SUPERTRACKER NATIONAL • Kenny Coolbeth fared better in the SuperTrapp SuperTracker main than he would in the Grand National. The Corbin Racing/Dave Burks Motorn __ s _
