Moore (2-1) won overall after Lacey's demise, followed by Kadell (5-2) and Schoen (4-3). Lacey and Carter (6-4) rounded out the top five. Traci Fleming, the number-14ranked rider in the Women's National League, came down from Washington and, at the completion of both hot, pounding motos, she had eamed a II sweep of the class to snare the overall win. Honda riders Jenny Crick and Cheryl Penrose battled throughout both motos for second overall, a position that went Krick's way after a late-race pass in moto two; she finished 2-2. Penrose (4-3), Oregon's Rochelle Neiman (3-5) and Rhiana Stenzel (7-4) rounded out the top five overall. _ STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY liGHT ALBANY, OR, AUG. 5 uzuki-mounted Tiger Lacey ~c1awed the competition to pieces at round three of the AMA Pacific Northwest Championship Motocross Series, held at the Albany Motorsports Park. Nobody could tame the Tiger, as the 18-year-old from Wolf Creek, Oregon, decimated the competition in the 250cc Pro class. Lacey, who had successful campaigns this year in the Canadian 125cc Nationals and AMA Western Region 125cc Supercross series, rode well despite having the flu and an injured arm (hurt while tangling with Damon Huffman a week earlier at the Washougal round of the AMA 125cc National Series). Lacey had tough competition from Oregon's Ryan Leach and Dan Moore in the 250cc Pro class, but the overall win went to the Answer/Temecula Motorsports/ Maxxis-backed Lacey. Keith Kadell put his CR out front in the first 250cc Pro moto, but it took Lacey less than a lap to displace the local up-and-coming rider to take the lead. Moore charged from well back in the field to finish second to Lacey, but his ride quickly went awry early on. "I was running midpack off the start," said Moore. "The next thing I knew, I was laying on the ground. I don't remember much, but I got going quickly and caught everyone but Lacey." While Moore had clicked off several impressive laps on his Shumate/ One/Thor-backed RM to trail Lacey at the finish, Lacey held an eight-second advantage at moto's end. Former AMA National number holder Tony Graves finished third aboard his Suzuki, while Jason Matthews, veter- f2 lAbove left) Tiger Lacey was a three-moto winner at round three of the Pacific Northwest Championship Series. Oregon. an Don Bisceglia and Kadell rounded out the top six at the completion. Yamaha-mounted Ryan Leach pulled the holeshot in moto two, and for many laps he held the point position aboard the Axo/Herb's Cycletown-supported Yamaha YZ426F. Lacey pushed Leach for well over half the race, but he outjumped the local favorite to take the lead. Leach stayed close to Lacey for the next couple of circuits, but when the lead pack encountered lapped riders, Leach lost ground. Leach also lost a position to a charging Moore, who worked up from a poor start to snag third place from Graves late in the moto and was right there to take second from Leach when the Washingtonian got through lapped riders better than Leach did. Leach finished third, barely edging Graves at the finish. Overall, Lacey went I-I to lead Moore (2-2) and Graves (3-4), followed by Leach (9-3) and Chris Church (7-5). Lacey got the jump on the field of 125cc Pro-class contestants in moto Albany MotDrspDI1s Park Albany, OreDDD Results: August 5, 2001 IllDund 3) one, but he had both Moore and YZ250F-mounted Graves to contend with. Thirtysomething riders Moore and Graves did all they could to drop Lacey from the lead, but Lacey held tough. On two occasions, Moore sneaked a wheel underneath Lacey, but Lacey had an answer for all of Moore's challenges and posted a narrow win over Moore and Graves. Rookie Pro Kelvin Schoen netted fourth, ahead of Kadell, Garhett Carter and National number 95, Billy Binckley, who finished seventh. Another AMA National veteran, Oregon's Ryan Huffman, didn't have a particularly good day. The former Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki support rider was injured in a practice crash and rode with a deeply gashed forearm and a mild concussion and finished ninth in the first 125cc moto. Things got bleak for Lacey in moto two. Right off the start, he took a hard bump from Huffman, ending his chances for a two-class sweep.
