Steve BRIEFLY••• Top Australian racer Michael Byrne made an appearance at Steel City. The 22·year-old recently inked a deal to ride as Mike LaRocco's teammate on the Amsoil/Dr Martens/Competition Acces· sories team for the 2002 and 2003 seasons. "I signed a two-year contract with Factory Connec· tion: said Byrne. "I thought it would be a pretty good lead in to come over here and do the iast round. Plus. I got selected for the Australian Motocross des Nations team. and Factory Connection is going to help me out with the bike. I came over to ride the bike and then. after this race. do some testing to get ready for the des Nations." Byrne, who has not ridden a 125cc machine since last year's Motocross des Nations. looked good on the bike. winning both his Saturday pre-qualifier and his Sunday moming qualifier. "I felt pretty good out there." said Byme. "It's been a while since I've ridden a 125. but I'm really enjoying it. The team is great and I'm really looking forward to next sea· son - Australia has never won the Motocross des Nations. and their 2001 lineup of Byrne. Chad Reed and Andrew McFarlane looks to be their best chance ever. "It should be a good race for us. " said Byme. "Chad and Andrew have both been over in Europe racing and. for the first time. we're all going to be on factory bikes. It's definitely our strongest team ever and. if everything goes smoothly on the day. I think we should definitely be in the top five. Chad just ran second to Mickael Pichon at that same track and Andrew got like fourth or fifth that same day. so both of those guys like the track. Anything can happen though. It's just one of those days." Byme. who finished ninth last year in 250cc Supercross. will contest the 125cc Western Region Supercross Series and will ride the 250cc class at the Eastem rounds. He will also compete in the 125cc Nationals. Team Honda's Ezra Lusk took the first 250cc qualifier win at Delmont Sunday moming. which clocked in as the fastest of the day at 10:23.60 minutes. Biackfoot Honda's Jean·Sebastien Roy topped the second 250cc qualifier and Upstate Cycle/Pirelli/Protel·backed Husqvarna rider Jim Neese won the 250cc consolation race. Amsoil/Dr. Martens/Joumeys/Competition Accessories' Steve Boniface was the winner of the first 125cc qualifier and Thor/Pro Circuit's Josh Demuth won the second 125cc qualifier. Thousand Oaks Yamaha/Pete's RV/Reynard Modifications' Jacob Mar· tin took the victory in the 125cc consolation race. u.s. Smokeless Tobacco continued its support of the pro privateers by presenting its Top Pri· vateer Awards at Steel City. Cemics.com/PC Woriwide/KTM's John Dowd was the top 250cc pri· vateer for the day. finishing 7·5. for fifth overall. followed by KTM/Sarges Cycle/AXO's Clark Stiles. who went 10·9. for ninth overall. Moto XXX/Atomic 22/DGY's Larry Ward was the top 125cc priva· teer. finishing 10-40. for sixteenth overall. followed by Lynwood Motoplex/RG3/MVR/AXO's Brad Hagseth. who finished 17·16. for seventeenth overall. The top privateer in each class receives $1000. while the runner·up receives $500. U.S. Smokeless Tobacco also announced the winners of its coveted year-end Top Privateer Awards. The runner·up to Dowd was Moto XXXlDGY/Atomic 22's Kyle Lewis. who finished ninth for the year. Lewis' Moto XXXlDGY/Atomic 22 teammate. Larry Ward. was the top 125cc privateer for the year. finishing fourth. followed by 3·D Racing/EZ Wider/South Shore Motorsports' Keith Johnson. who finished out the year in 17th. In his first race back from injury. Team Honda's Ryan Hughes took a nasty tumble on Steel City's huge tabletop. The crash occurred during the second 250cc practice session on Saturday and according to Team Honda's Ciiff White, Hughes suffered a broken collarbone, several broken ribs. and a partially collapsed lung. Hughes. who will ride on Jeremy McGrath's Yamaha team with an outdoor·only contract in 2002. was hoping to close out his year with a strong ride. Another Team Honda rider. Sebastien Tortelli. was noticeably absent from Steel City. Tortelli had a nasty crash at the previous round at Binghamton and sat out the race. Tortelli injured his eye and was experiencing some blurry vision. White expects that Tortelli will probably still be able to ride at the Motocross des Nations. where he will compete for his home country of France. He should also be ready for the THQ U.S. Open in October. Fast by Ferracci/DKNY/Husqvama's Steve Lamson competed in the 250cc class at Steel City. "I haven't been doing that great in the 125s'- said the two-time 125cc National Champion. "I rode the 250 during the week and I figured it might be a good change. I thought I would see how it goes in that class. I feel pretty healthy now. but it's just been a bad year. The team's been great. but injurywise I've been uP-and·down." Lamson went g.<;. for sixth overall in the 250cc class. Lamson also confirmed that he will be competing in the upcoming THQ U.S. Open. With the Canadian National Motocross Championships now completed. several riders from that series made their way to Delmont for the final AMA National. Recently crowned Champion JeanSebastien Roy. of the Blackfoot Honda/Michelin/FMF/Oakley team. Morgan Racing/Suzuki of Canada's Mike Treadwell. KTM Canada's Marco Dube and Montclair Yamaha's David Ramsey all competed at Steel City. Team KTM/Red Bull's Kelly Smith faiied to qualify for the 125cc class at Steel City_ Smith took a nasty. first·tum tumble in his Sunday moming qualifier and was run over by several bikes. Smith tried to compete in the 125cc consolation race. but came up a few spots short of qualifying. "I'm pretty sore. but I'm okay." said the friendly rider from Ludington. Michigan. According to Smith. he plans to defend both his Eastem Four-Stroke National Title and his THQ U.S. Open Four·Stroke Championship this year. According to information published on his website. www.davidpingree.com. KTM/Red BUll rider David Pingree has signed a supercross-only deal with the team for the 2002 season. Popular privateer rider Ryan Clark reports that he has inked a deal with LCR Racing.com (www.lcrracing_com) for the 2002 season_ Clark. from Albuquerque. New Mexico. is famous for his 'Solitaire' column. which appears at www.racerxill.com. According to Clark. he will be joined on the team by fellow Albuquerque native Keith Johnson. Clark will contest the 125cc Westem Region Supercross Series and the 250cc Nationals. while Johnson will compete in the 125cc Eastern Region Supercrosses and the 125cc Nationals. According to Clark. Puma Athletics will be a major sponsor of the team. Plano Honda's Billy Payne. who injured his hand two rounds earlier at Millville. attempted to ride at Steel City but had to pui! out of his Saturday qualifier. Payne has never raced at Steei City and was hoping to gain an advantage for next year. To help raise money for Team USA at the Motocross des Nations. an industry race was held duro ing Friday's Amateur program. Forty riders paid S20 apiece to compete. Innovation Sports' Tom Car· son was the winner of the event. followed by Racer X's Davey Coombs. Factory Yamaha Freestyle rider Trevor Vines was third. Freelance photographer Jim Sanderson devised a clever plan to get himself to the Motocross des Nations. With the help of friends TIm Ferry and announcer Tim Coller. Sanderson auctioned off photographic prints of the Factory Yamaha star. raising more than $600. At the urging of fans. Cotter literally auctioned the shirt right off of Ferry's back. fetching a cool $205 for the rider's Factory Yamaha pit shirt. The ever-gracious Ferry gave up the shirt for the cause and now. when Team USA lines up in Belgium to defend their title. Sanderson will be there to capture the moment on film. Texan Josh Demuth came out of the woodwork to race in his first National since Steel City in 'gg. The Arenacross star. who used to be a fixture in the 250cc outdoor class. rode well aboard his VZ250F in the 125cc class. He won his moming qualifier somewhat easily. then rode to a 15th in the first moto. A mechanicai problem in the second moto placed him at 21 st overall. and he made six points for the year. Not too shabby for the newlywed, who is looking forward to the upcoming Arenacross series. In a private ceremony at the end of the day. Kawasaki boss Bruce Strjenstrom presented Ricky Carmichael with a framed miniature depicting ail of the titles the Floridian eamed on Kawasakis since he started racing. In all. 16 different titles were included. starting with the 65cc Stock class title, and of course ending with the 2001 Supercross and 250cc National Championship crowns. Carmichael thanked all of the Kawasaki employees that were in attendance and then put away the award in his motomome for safekeeping. Carmichael then commented. "I'll make an announcement about my future in a couple of weeks. but I've had a great career at Kawasaki. and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world. "
