Johnny Campbdl (Hon): 2. Pa~ Knouse (KTM): 3. up to tail DeHoop across the finish. Spectators were in awe of the amazing air show put on by Powers' roaring four· stroke. In the final 125cc B moto, Troy Bloomquist held the lead, but the real battle was for second, between Craig Hathaway, Anthony Tanner and Shayne Fox. They exchanged the position often until the final lap, when Hathaway firmly secured it. Even after crashing on the tabletop and restarting his bike with one quick kick, he held second, not realizing his chest protector had become unfastened. Hathaway flew past the checkered flag after Bloomquist with his chest-protector straps streaming out behind. Fans were on the edge of their seats when the final 250cc A class took to the track. Lead exchanges were fast and furious. Kevin Smith got the holeshot, with DeHoop and Mark Powers close behind. Wiersma foilowed the trio until the final lap, when leader Smith crashed in a hairpin turn. DeHoop was nearly beside him at the time and soared past the checkered flag after his rival disappeared. To the delight of the capacity crowd, the 250cc A riders were each given a box full of PMS T-shirts to toss Into the bleachers. It was a great night for all, and many racers left with high·quality, marble-based trophies. Every tiny·tot competitor went home with an equally impressive trophy, surrounded by groups of proud relatives. G«g - . (Hon). SR BEe;, I. John e.,.,. (Vom): 2. 0.0 M<"o (Kow): 3. Jeny sa· _(&a). Newaygo County Fairgrounds DeHoop SWOOPS to Newaygo Wins By MELiSSA YELL FREMONT, MI, AUG. 11 The climax of the annual Newaygo County Agricultural Fair is always the Powers Motor Sports (known locally as 'PMS-j Arena Cross. Matt Powers brings his team together to put on some of the best racing in west Michigan. Extra bleachers were added this year to increase seating capacity. In past years, spec· tators have been turned away when it became standing room only. Racers and fans both got what they came for. The 200 motocrossers were challenged by the technical track built by Todd DeHoop, which had to be constructed the same day because of the tractor pulls using the arena the night before. The fans, many of them 4·H members from the fair who rarely get to see motocross, were thrilled by the big air time and qUick lead exchanges. John Grewe continues to lead the series chase this year in the Over 25, 125cc A and 250cc A classes. Other series leaders are Scott Moreen (50cc Advanced), Shane McCumber (6Occ 7-11), Joel Jager (80cc 711), Anthony Tanner (80cc 12-15, 125cc 1215, 125cc B), Nick Nielsen (125cc C), Allan Putnam (250cc C), Nick Pierce (250cc B, 25+ B·Cj, Kevin Smith (16-24), and Hailey Sandison (Women's). These racers came out to defend the ieads they worked so hard for all season. With only one race to go after this event, finishes were important. The Over 25 class thrilled the audience with huge air time from Mark Powers. With only three in the class, the action was easy to track. Chad DeHoop took the holeshot and maintained the lead. Dan Wiersma and Mark Powers battled for second until Powers moved 92 SEPTEMBER 12,2001 • cue Shawn McConnell showed everyone that his broken ankle has healed by winning the Handicap main. Dukie Ermolenko defended his Stanley Exhaust Motorcycle Demo Derby title by being the last one standing in a field that numbered over 20. Hicks won the first Scratch semi, ahead of Ed Castro, Randy DiFrancesco and Kit Nay. The second semi went to Josh Larsen, ahead of McConnell, Ermolenko and Bobby Schwartz. Nay drew the pole for the last-chance qualifier, with Ermolenko in two, DiFrancesco in three and Schwartz in four. DiFrancesco got a great start that put him at the head of the pack. Ermolenko tried to make a race of it, but all he could do was chase DiFrancesco all the way to the checkered. The final spot in the Scratch main was DiFrancesco's. The draw for starting position in the Scratch mllin was done at the line. DiFrancesco drew the pole, Hicks came up with two, and Larsen was in three. Castro would be coming out of four, and McConnell was against the wall in five. Hicks dropped the hammer as the gate came up and literally motored away from the rest of the field. Larsen gave chase, but Hicks' lead was just too great and four laps is not nearly enough time. McConnell picked up third, with Castro and DiFrancesco rounding out the field. The Handicap main had Sean Harmatiuk on the 10-yard line by himself. Bryan Thompson WllS on the 20, also alone. Nobody was on the 30, but the 40 was crowded, with Ermolenko, Castro, DiFrancesco and McConnell. Larsen and Schwartz shared the 50. Harmatiuk did a great job of getting a good lead on the field, but the pressure started building as McConnell got closer and closer. He ran into trouble on the fourth lap when the bike hooked up and the front end came up. He was on the back straight and had a full head of steam heading into turn three. He just couldn't hang on to it and ended up in the wall in the comer. He. was all right, but the bike was pretty much toast. Dad rolled out his bike and Shawn was able to make the restart, but it would be at the back of the pack. McConnell took the lead, and with four laps to go, it was his to win - and he did, getting down low on the pole, where he does his best work. The "Mad Dog" is backl DiFrancesco was credited with second, with Castro third, followed by Schwartz, Larsen, Ermolenko, Thompson and Harmatiuk. Michael Mattocks won the Support main,' topping Rudy Laurer and Dave Delbridge. Rod Lenz showed the field the way home in the Support B main_ Brent Smith and Mike Boyle were second and third. Redwood Empire Fairgrounds Mondo Goes Big By SANDY CUNE UKIAH, CA, AUG. 4 Tony Mondo had a busy weekend at Redwood Empire Fairgrounds, as he raced his Kewasakis in three different classes - six motos - in less than five hours. Mondo mashed his motor and took the holeshot, along with the subsequent checkered flag, in both the 125 and 250cc Expert classes. He made every lap look easy. Mondo was even tripling the whoops, whereas most of the riders take them one or two at a time. Crossing up for the checkered on the last tabletop after each Expert moto, Mondo then hopped off his bike and pushed it through the pits while hundreds of spectators were hootin' and hollerin', enjoying the night racing at the fairgrounds. Saturday the 18th of August will be the last time riders will be racing under the lights in Ukiah. Mashin' Mondo will remain the monster on the track, but he will have his work cut out for him, as more than 20 riders return from a weekend on the river for racing under the lights. Six-year-old David Beebe is one to keep your eyes on. Beebe rides a 200 1 Cobra 50 and can regularly be seen holding taking the holeshot in the Pee Wee (4·6) class. Beebe has raced at several other tracks in the 6- to JO-year·old class, with up to 30 riders on the gate at a time and has placed as high as fifth. Results WM: I. Helley SandIIOn (Suz); 2.
