STORY AND PHOTOS BY JIM P. SANDERSON BINGHAMTON, NY, AUG. 24-25 T he Broome-Tioga Sports Center, commonly referred to as one of the "Greatest Spectator Courses in America," and Tom Hurd Motorsports, hosted round 11 of the Chevy Trucks/AMA I25/250cc Pro Nationals, and as is traditional with most tracks on the AMA Pro circuit, two days of amateur races were held prior to the National. Just over 800 riders signed up to race the 24 classes slated for the twoday race program. Eight classes were split into two groups - A and B, respectively - so that all racers would get to ride two full motos rather than run qualifiers to reduce each class to 40 gates, thus leaving some riders only one moto. Tom Hurd Motorsports believes in giving each and every rider as much track time as possible. There were some significant changes made to the Broome-Tioga facility. A new Thor Twin Tower Pro finish line was constructed, as well as a new points leader board and a Dunlop Banner Tower over the front Supercross step-down tabletop jump. There was also a new tunnel jump added in the front of the racecourse to allow spectators additional access to the National hill. On Saturday, Broome-Tioga also hosted round five of the AMA/Bel- Ray WML Motocross Championship Series. The WML runs an amateur class and a Pro class at each of their six Nationals. Swedish racer Elin Mann won the overall, while New Zealand's Tania Satchwell maintained her points lead in the series with one round left. Carroll came out on top in the 250cc Open Expert class, while Boyesen won both the Over 25 and Over 30 Open Expert classes. Boyesen and Carrol traded moto wins in the Over 30 Open Expert class, with Boyesen getting the all-important second-moto win for the class overall. In the Over 25 Open Expert class, Boyesen rode to a 3-1 score for the overall, while Carroll's 2-2 rides got him the runner-up spot on the Over 25 Open Expert class podium. Zach Devaul piloted his CR to the front of the pack of 32 riders in the first 250cc Open Expert moto. In tow were Brian Carroll, John Ober, Mike Veracka and BoyesenfTwin Air's Dag Boyesen. Carroll made the pass on Devaul for the lead just after the start of lap two. Veracka moved up to third, Boyesen took over fourth and Ober dropped back to fifth. Ober then went down in what looked like a pretty bad over-the-bars crash, but he was up and appeared to be okay. Carroll had a seven-second lead by lap three, but behind him a battle for second and third was brewing. Veracka closed the gap on Devaul and made the pass for second, dropping Devaul to third. Just before the start of lap four, Boyesen caught and passed Devaul to relegate him back another position to fourth. Jason Boron was fifth. Carroll had checked out by lap five with a I4-second advantage. Veracka and Boyesen were still second and third, while Boron moved up to fourth and Devaul dropped to fifth. Carroll took the checkers and the first moto win with Veracka, Boyesen, Boron and Tom Burton trailing.
