Nevada. on September 16 at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. The exhibition will feature six BMW motorcycles from 1923 to the present. including the R32. R90S. RI00RS. R80G/S Paris Dakar and R1200C. o o o o o o o According to event promoters. some $500.000 was raised in the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America. with Petty leading the ride on a Victory Motorcycle. The rice began on June 24 in Folsom. California. and ended July 1 at the Petty farm near Charlotte. North Carolina. with a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert. ~o Educator and longtime motorcycle drag racer Lance Brown. 51 of Columbus. Georgia. succumbed to injuries received in a street bike acciqent in his hometown on August 21. Brown and his Funnybike were a familiar sight at drag races throughout the southeast. Brown is survived by his daughter. Jodie. and brothers. Robert and David. o o o o o Honda's 2002 GL1800 Gold Wing has been certified to meet the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) 2008 emissions standards. according to American Honda. In fact. the 2002 Gold Wing's 118-horsepower engine exceeds the CARB 2008 emissions standard for carbon monoxide by 67 percent and the emissions standard for hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen by 79 percent. Honda says. This achievement is realized through the use of Honda's programmed fuel injection and the use of a three-way closed-loop fuel-management system that utilizes two exhaust catalyzers. "Honda has made a global commitment to produce low-emission engines that do not sacrifice performance and driveability." said Honda's Motorcycle Division vice president Ray Blank. "Its yet another example of our 'Performance First' philoso~hy. and we are very pleased that we can offer our riders this combination of power and low"emissions in the Gold Wing." Longtime motorsports journalist Bill Lorenzen. 69. died from complications stemming from heart surgery on August 7. Lorenzen was a member of the Motorsports Press Association (MSPA) for more than 20 years and served as vice president of automotive writers. He was also a motorsports writer for both the Vallejo Times Herald and Fairfield Daily Republic in the North Bay. Lorenzen covered motorsports events at his home track. Sears Point Raceway. for more than 20 years and was considered the "Dean of the Media Center" at the raceway. He was born in Denver in 1931 and was a graduate of the University of Colorado. A memorial service for his friends will be held on September 8 at the Captain Charles Stone Hall at the Camel Barns in Benicia from 2-4 p.m. Lorenzen is survived by his wife. Nanette. The fourth annual Volunteer State Trail Riders Association (VSTA) trail ride at Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Tennessee, will be held. October 26-28. with the VSTA expecting 800-1000 riders. including Scott Summers, Barry Hawk. Shane Nalley, Fred Andrews and Shane Watts. This event marks the only time that Loretta's off-road trails can be ridden in a non-competitive environment. according to VSTA. The Championship Cup Series (CCS) announced a year-to-date growth rate of 27 percent in licensed riders, bringing the total number to nearly 4000 for the year. according to a release from CCS. "While the number of total CCS events has fluctuated, the increase in ridership in very impressive." said Kevin Elliott. Elliott chalks the suc- 8 o o o o o o Muzzy's Performance Product's Doug Meyer rode a Muzzy-prepared Kawasaki ZX-1 2R to a new land-speed record in the MPS-G 1350 class recently. according to a release from Muzzy. Meyer rode to a two-run average speed of 203.471 mph, eclipsing the previous record by nearly 1.5 mph and putting Meyer in the elite "Bonneville 200 mph Club." The MPS (gas) class allows internal engine modifications up to the class limit of 1350cc and the installation of an aftermarket exhaust. Team Husqvarna has announced that it will provide factory support. motorcycles and assistance to Elin Mann during the final two rounds of the AMA/BelRay Women's Motocross League Championship at the Broome-Tioga and Steel City Nationals during the 2001 AMA/Chevy Trucks Motocross Championships. The Swedish teenager. who hails from Kareby, Sweden, and is the defending Pro-Clean Ladies British MX Invitational Senior Class Champion. is running 10th overall in the 2001 AMA/Bel-Ray WML MX Championship Cross Road Adventures. promoters of the World Off Road Championship Series (WORCS). is now excepting entries online. Wamer Riley rode his streamlined Harley-Davidson-powered motorcycle to the fastest top-speed of the week at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. His recordsetting speed was 200.298 mph... Dr. Allen D. Wood showed off his new electric motorcycle, which used a 4.5-hp golf-cart engine to propel it to a maximum speed of 35 mph. with a range (at 30 mph) of about 40 miles.
