(Below) Lany Legem (aU) went on a _ cia. . rampage on the Dick Mann-eleslgned course at The Farm in 'ChehaUs, Washington, posting the Over 40 and Cla. .lc 500cc Expert wins. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY liGHT CHEHAUS,WA,AUG.12 onda-mounted Oregonian David Germain and Californian Robert Poole were among the elite few double-class winners at the fourth annual Ch.ehalis Classic, which doubled as Round 13 of the AHRMA/Speed & Sport National Vintage Motocross Series, held at The Farm. Germain hammered the competition in the 125cc and Open Expert classes, while Poole rode a pair of BSAs to wins in the Over 50 and Premier Lightweight Expert classes. Washington's Larry Legarra was also dominant scoring the Over 40 and Classic 500cc Expert wins. Nearly 400 riders - from as far away as Florida and New Jersey were on hand, but few were as dominating as Germain, who blew the competition into the weeds while riding his finely tuned 1973 Honda CR 125 Elsinore to 1-1 wins in both classes. Germain's first overall win of the day came in the 125cc Expert class. Germain rocketed into the lead in the first 125cc Expert/Intermediate moto and went unchallenged wire to wire. Behind him raged a brutally close battle for second between Washington riders Jeff Pugh and Buck Murphy and New Jersey's John Hart; former Can-Am factory rider Murphy finished second and Pugh finished third, followed by Hart and Californian Pete Portner. Moto two was much the same, as Germain took control right off the bat. Californian Ron Melton ran second for much of the opening lap, but he and Murphy tangled and the position would then be a lock for Murphy. With his 2-2 placings, Murphy landed second overall aboard the sano 1974 H 54 SEPTEMBER 5,2001 • Yamaha YZ125, trailing Germain. Pugh (3-3) netted third overall, trailed by Hart (4-4) and Portner (5-5). Nevada's Mark Hammond led local rider James Neinstadt and Georgia's Peggy Cozart into the top three in the 125cc Intermediate portion. Germain also grabbed a win in the penultimate race of the day, the Open Expert class. Californian Tom McKinney and Oregon's Aaron Hohman trailed him in both motos, but it was Hohman, riding a 1974 Honda XL350, who thumped to second overall with 3-2 placings. Hohman trailed Germain by nine seconds in moto two but finished ahead of the Husky-mounted McKinney (2-3), Penton rider J.P. Morgen (5-4) and CZ rider Blake Landon (4-5) overall. Poole faced tough competition in the Over 50 Expert class. Canadian Wayne Grimm and Oregonians Bill Rowand Billy Crager applied pressure to the BSA rider in both motos, but Poole answered all their challenges, and with the win finalized his two-class decimation (after earlier winning the Premier Lightweight Expert class). The Maico-mounted Grimm (2-3) finished second overall, followed by Crager (3-4), Row (7-2) and Tom Street (5-5). Colorado's Bob Garner rode a 1974 CZ400 to an overall win in the adjoined Over 50 Intermediate class via a 1-1 sweep. Californian Chuck De Ran (2-2) trailed Garner overall, cue •• n e _ 51: and Canada's John Caldwell (3-3), Dennis Rose (5-5) and Montana's Dan Smilie (4-6) filled out the top five. Vintage Motocross pioneer Dallas Nyblod led the first 250cc Expert moto, followed by Oregonians Joe Casey, Chris Clark and McKinney. While Nyblod pulled away for a convincing win aboard his 1974 YZ250, the confrontation for second went down to the finish. Clark eventually broke free from Casey and McKinney, but by then Nyblod's advantage was too great. However, the unleashing of moto two, Nyblod took a nasty tumble and then spend the rest of the moto forging forward. Clark took command, with McKinney and Landon trailing. Clark (3-1) snared his only overall win of the day, followed by McKinney (2-2), Nyblod (1-4), Landon (5-3) and Casey (4-6) overall. Californian Tony Failla used a 3-1 tally to win the adjoined Intermediate class, trailed by fellow CR pilot Christopher James (2-2) and Bultaco-mounted Roger Landberg (1-4). Former Bultaco teammates Tom Rapp and Ron Pomeroy didn't have their most memorable days of racing. Rapp suffered a horrendous crash while running second in the first 500cc Expert moto, which was won by Hohman. Rapp's Bultaco lost its rear-brake rod somewhere on the final lap and he came into the dogleg finish line full tilt. "All I know is that I almost killed the scoring crew," said Rapp. "It threw me over the bars and I landed hard on my head. My neck hurts, so I'm calling it a day." Pomeroy has been long overdue for a win. On this day, the rider from Yakima came close. While leading the second 500cc Expert moto, Pomeroy's Bultaco suffered a light seizure, but he nursed it to a secondplace finish, trailing only Hohman, who won overall. Pomeroy (3-2) placed second overall, ahead of Penton-mounted Morgen (4-3). In the annual Canadian/American Challenge, the Yanks prevailed once again, after a tie breaker went in Team USA's favor. Washington's Dirk Murphy was the winner individually, followed by teammate Bill Row, Canada's Wayne Grimm, USA's Bill Crager and Canada's Martin Spriggs. eN' lbe Fann Chehalis, W.shingtan Resuhs: August 12, 2001 (Round 13 of 181 SPTSMN 125 NOV: 1.
