Red Bud MX Beckett No Martyr at Red Bud MX By BART NEWMAN BUCHANAN, MI, JULY 29 Dan Beckett rode his powerful M&M Cycle/Brad Lowe Racing Suspension·spon· sored YZ125 to a win in the highly competitive 16·24 class at Red Bud MX. In the first moto, Michael Zylstra was out front as the 21·rider pack rounded turn one, followed by four-stroke pilot Corey Paulsell, with Beckett and John Mazur pushing their 125s to the max to keep pace. Mazur used a great line in the orchard area to roar past Beckett. This seemed to light a fire under Beckett, who rode like a man possessed throughout the remainder of the first lap, pushing his scooter past Paulsell and Zylstra before the first lap was in the books. After Beckett moved to the front. Zylstra had his hands fuJi with a hard·charging Chris Cadieux, who took advantage of a miscue by Paulsell that also slowed Mazur. After maintaining a good lead all moto, Beckett backed off the gas just a touch, allowing the battle between Zyl· stra and Cadieux to close the gap, though not enough to be a real threat to Beckett's victory. Mazur was fourth, and Chris Huening rode well the entire moto to score a solid fifth. Moto two saw a new player in the lead, as Aaron Yoder had the qUickest trigger finger off the gate, leading the pack through tum one. Yoder's lead was short· lived, though, as the Kawasaki rider got into the tum at the bottom of the ski jump a little hot, allowing Zylstra and Beckett to dive inside and move ahead of the holeshot man. Beckett used a great line in the finish·line area to get by Yoder, who had recovered to move past Zylstra and back into second before lap two was completed. On lap three, the braking bumps at the bottom of the ski jump pulled Beckett to the ground and back to fourth. The new leader was Yoder, while Zylstra and Paulsell battled behind him. The fight over fifth between Cadieux and Mazur was also a heated one. The last lap was a naH·biter, as Paulsell was using every inch of the track to try to find a way around Zylstra, and he did just that at the bottom of the Monza wall, hugging the inside line to make the pass into second. Yoder was still out front, but Paulsell passed Yoder heading up laRocco's Leap to take over first. Zylstra's troubles had just begun, as Beckett was on the pipe, trying to salvage the overall and it was Zylstra's position that he needed. Paulsell held the inside line in the last three turns to take the moto win, with Yoder a close second. Beckett held the throttle to the stop and swept around the outside of the last turn to snatch third place from Zylstra, with Cadieux holding off Mazur to stay in the top five. Results WMN: I. During Saturday's Amateur Day, which featured a single·moto format, Strunk came out dressed for battle and hoping to catch up on some track time in anticipation of the follOWing dayis Chevy Trucks AMA 125/250 Pro National. Yamaha rider Clint Burkeen took the 250cc B win, and Kenny Dale Orr spanked the field In group one of the 125cc B class. Willy Browning aced the second group of 125cc B riders, bringing his RM125 in for the win. After finishing in podium spots in two classes, Reed decided he needed a win.
