finished in the top five out of the 11rider field.
The 600cc Amateur class featured
an amusing battle between Tulsa,
Oklahoma's Ray Nichols and Glen
McNamara. Nichols held the lead, followed closely by Glen, and at one
point Nichols was seen gesturing to
Glen as they raced down the front
chute. Eventually Glen made a clean
pass on Nichols to take the lead and
score the win. Nichols crashed on the
last lap; luckily, he was unhurt. Little
Rock, Arkansas' Paul Covert was
awarded second, ahead of Oklahoma
City's J.e. Clark.
"I teased him [Nichols] afterward,"
Glen joked. "He said he was motioning me to stay back, and I told him, 'I
thought you were motioning me to
pass you,' and he said, 'No! You took
the wrong signal!' We've got a great
camaraderie. "
The Pro Master main event featured a race-long dice between Manhattan, Kansas, rider Bill Snyder and
Princeton, Iowa's Roger Johnson,
who broke away from the rest of the
field and traded paint throughout the
race. Snyder eventually gamered the
win over Johnson by a wheel's
length. Little Rock, Arkansas' Mike
Meyer, Pipestone, Minnesota's Dennis
Melcher and VDTRA president Mike
Zbrozek from Littleton, Colorado,
rounded out the top five.
