There was one more surprise, as Jenkner pushed through to the lead on lap 17, and held it for one more. But the German was to be overwhelmed in one of the all-time great last laps. Into the first corner, Sanna forced ahead, with Elias pushing into second, a position he had to fight for all the way around. But he wasn't finished yet. His first attempt at Sanna at the chicane at the bottom of the hill failed, and he was second on the final uphill straight and into the last left. But he was fast out, and was moving alongside Sanna on the way into the second part of the big S-bend when the Italian slid sideways and fell. And Elias had won it. By sheer luck, none of the others ran into the sliding machine, and the experienced Cecchinello managed to snitch second, with Jenkner third and Ui fourth, on his back wheel. Sabbatani survived it all a little way behind, then Smrz conquered the locals, with Hules next, Pedrosa's Honda eighth after catching in the last laps, then Talmacsi.
