BRIEFLY••• Weather was once again the major story early ,n the day. Heavy rains moved through the area early Saturday morning, tuming the clay half-1mIe Into a quagmire. The program was altered by eliminating the qualifying heats and the racing started right on time. When the shell-shocked riders retumed to the pits after the main event. they received the terrible news about their fallen comrade, Will Davis. "It's a tough deal, so hard to believe: Chris Carr said.• More important than a great motorcycle racer, Will Davis was a great man, a family man, and to lose someone like him is very tough, The track wasn't that bad, but,t wasn't defined down where he was running. In my case and Will's, we hadn't been on the track since the fi,st heats, but it was just an unfortunate racing accident. I think we're all WIshing ,t would have rained todor. and none of this would have happened." The series' most veteran nder, Jay Springsteen also felt the pain of Davis' loss. °God not Will, he's got a wife and litUe boy, Oh my God," said Springsteen. "I've been doing this a long time. It can happen anytime you throw your leg over one of these things. I know it sure changed everybody's attitude when we sat out there for a half hour. I'd rather ride a pea-rock track anytime, these type of tracks (clay), it's so tacky, when you fall off you just stick. On pea-rock you just slide around." Kenny Coolbeth was back in action for the first time since his crash at the Harrington Half Mile just two weeks earlier. Coolbeth rode to a solid 10th-place finish. "They're sore, my hands are sore, but I think I'll be all right next week: Coolbeth said. "I'll try the short track and see what happens, but the mile should be no problem," Although it's not high on everyone's minds now, Chris Carr has exploded what was a close points race, Carr now holds a 31 -point leads over Joe Kopp, who was involved in the fourthtum crash on the opening lap of the main event. The full extent of the champ's injuries - he was struck by Davs' motorcycle before going down - are still unknown, although a separated shoulder and broken bones in each hand have been diagnosed. Kopp was released from the hospital, but he is likely to miss the rest of the season, with the possible exception of the series finale Du Quoin Mile, Ceo Roeder II was also treated and released with hand/arm injuries stemming from the crash. n cue' - __ !IS SEPTEMBER 5. 2001 25
