'inotoc~oss i - -- --- ---, - AMA Chevy Trucks 250cc U.S. Motocross Championship Series Round 10: Spring Creek MX Park Team Suzuki's Kevin Windham was next on the podium. The Louisianan finished second to Carmichael in the first moto and held second for much of the second moto before being overtaken by Ferry later in the moto. After coming off a solid win at Washougal two weeks earlier, Windham was visibly upset with the way things went for him at Millville. He wants nothing more than to win a few more races before he travels overseas to do battle for the United States at the Motocross des Nations in September. "Those sand-whoops were brutal today and Ricky was on it," Windham said at the end of the day. "I had some good lines but not good enough to catch Ricky. Those guys both had one up on me today and I'm going to have to go in and do good at Binghamton." Windham still holds second in the points standings, 50 points out of the lead, going into the final two rounds. He definitely needs to have four solid motos in the next few weeks if he plans on keeping Carmicael from taking his second National title in a row. He will also be a member of the upcoming Motocross des Nations team. "I'm excited this year and I'm having fun,' Windham said. "I'm looking forward to going over to Belgium to race at the des Nations too. J've been there before and unfortunately we didn't win. It was tough to fly back a good to finally not have someone on my tail," Carmichael said. "My bike is working great and my performance showed today. The track is real similar to my track at home with the soil and the roughness and all, but I sure don't have whoops like that. That's for sure." Second overall in Minnesota was another Florida resident, Team Yamaha's Tim Ferry. The YZ426Fmounted rider rode to a 3-2 score after starting strong in both motos and making a few passes as he worked his way to the front. Both Carmichael and Ferry used their knowledge of the loamy terrain and huge whoops to their advantage, as they each put on their own schools of motocross racing. Ferry has been on a roll throughout the last few races, and he is obviously comfortable and in control of his big four-stroke. He holds a solid third in points with only two races remaining. "The four-stroke is working good, but I burned a clutch in the first moto," Ferry said of his third-place first-moto finish. "We got it fixed and I got him [Kevin Windham, second in the first moto I back the second time out. The Florida native, who had been bothered by intestinal problems throughout the outdoor series, proved to everyone that he's healthy once again and as fast as ever. Carmichael gated well in both motos, grabbing early leads, and cruising to two moto wins aboard his Chad Watts-tuned Chevy Trucks Kawasaki 10<250. The win marked his sixth overall of the season and also his 40th of his Pro-racing career. Carmichael also noted that his physical problems are now behind him and that he is focusing on one thing - the 2001 National Championship. And that could very well happen next week at Binghamton, New York, if things go his way. "I feel that I've been behind everybody in the last few weeks and it's C 6 AUGUST 29, 2001 • cue I • ne""s main competition coming in here and he rode really well.
