__"""',....,.........~---=--------,w ~ a: 8 > ffi Q. > '" ~ Mill Creek MX: Justin Graham was a double victor in Pell City, Alabama, taking wins in both the 125cc and 250cc C classes. BAMA Summer Motocross Series Round 5: Mill Creek MX Monk Masters Mill Creek Bv STEVE AND PEGGV CORlEE PEll CITY, AL, JULY 22 xcellent weather and a perfectly prepared track greeted riders as Mill Creek MX in Pell City, Alabama, hosted round five of the BAMA Summer Motocross Series. Alabama's Jon Boy Monk was the big winner in the Pro division, as he took the wins in both the 125cc A and 250cc A classes. Monk's victories did not come easily, however, as he had to overcome challenges from a hard-charging Josh Thompson in both divisions. To help riders attending the National Amateur finals at Loretta Lynn's next month, Mill Creek used a one-mota, 15-minutes-plus-two-laps format in order to familiarize everyone with the demands of a long mota. This approach was well-received by everyone and racing action was hot and heavy, with close battles in every class. E 60 AUGUST 29,2001 • cue I e Monk chose this race to debut his new ride a KTM 520. Adapting to the new mount immediately, Monk took the 250cc A-class win, ahead of fellow Alabaman Thompson. Following Thompson home was Yl-mounted Tim Castrone and then Brian Robertson, aboard his CR250. Robertson later came back from his disappointing fourth in the A class to dominate the Over 25 and Over 30 classes. Monk also took a hard-fought win in the 125cc A class, putting his RM 125 in front at the flag following an intense battle with Thompson during the entire mota. Following Thompson to the flag was, again, Castrone in third, and then Troy Miller in fourth. The new one-mota format instilled a sense of urgency in many riders that caused some who were not used to pacing themselves to burn out early in the race. Normally, this situation is common in the Beginner n __ s ranks. However, in the 125cc D class, one of the largest of the day, the top three riders battled the entire race, with the winner, Justin Donahoo, making the pass for the lead at the white flag. Finishing close was CRmounted Brad Yeargan and Yl rider Chip Moore. Taylor Reynolds rode his KTM to the win in the 250cc D class, which was also a very large group, followed by Jeff Hilyer and Marty Swindall. The C classes had only one winner in both divisions, as Honda-mounted Justin Graham easily topped both the 125cc C and 250cc C classes. Second place in the 125cc class went to Yl-mounted Steven Hynes, and the runner-up in the 250cc class was Jeff Lowery, who also took his RM to second place in the Over 25 class. The Mini classes had large turnouts in all of the divisions, as many on hand are slated to compete at Loretta Lynn's. Especially notable was the performance of triple-class winner William Cato, who put his KX in front of a charging lack Lucas in the Supermini class and CR-mounted lack Campbell in the 85cc (12-13) class and then brought out his TTR Yamaha to top the 0-125cc FourStroke class. The Preteen win went to Nick Jones, who also won the 85cc (7- 11) class. Following Jones to the flag in the Preteen class was KX rider Chase Merritt, who came back to take top honors in the 65cc (10-11) contest. The 65cc (7-9) win went to Andy Stone, and the 50cc win went to Jacob Conn. Alabama Web master Randall Kipker, returning from an injury incurred earlier this summer, was back on form as he bested Yl-mounted John Meyers to take the Over 35-c1ass win and then came back later to garner the runner-up position in the Over 40 class, behind Mississippi's Steve Speights. The McWilliams family continues to improve this great racing facility, and Mill Creek is fast becoming one of the most popular racetracks in the region. This month's highlight was a new bleacher system with a capacity of more than 200 people, placed in a perfect viewing position. The onelong-mota format proved to be extremely popular as well, with many riders electing to compete in two or more classes. eN Mill Creek MX Pell City,AJab...... AMP/&FI Los Banos Top Bun Summercross Series Round 5: Los Banos Fairgrounds Truglio Pulls the Trigger! Bv JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS LOS BANOS, CA, JULY 21 amaha of Modesto/TMR/O'Neal/ Spy-backed Craig Truglio finally hit the bull's-eye by winning the Top Gun Shootout main event at round five of the AMP/GFI Los Banos Top Gun Summercross Series, held at the Los Banos Fairgrounds. Truglio, who in past rounds has consistently been a contender to win the highlight of the evening only to come up a little short at the end, simply put in a flawless Y ride, beating Jeff Pestana, Harold Hageman and David Boothe. Gridded in the third spot from the rear of the single-row start, Truglio admittedly had one of the least desirable spots and, to make matters worse, he wasn't feeling 100 percent. "I got the flu or something last night, but I'm feeling a little better tonight," Truglio said prior to the race. "It's not the best start spot, and with Hageman two spots ahead, it's going to be tough."
