Ryan Hansen and Matt Buyten provided all of the freestyle entertainment. DIRT HILLCLIMB (Above) The 925-foot Dirt Hillclimb provided a good challenge for the 200 riders that competed. and Erik Schaffer was third. Following the Super IT awards on Saturday night, the paved part of the course was turned into a short track and a pack of bikes and riders went at it just for fun. PAVEMENT HILL CLIMB This was the sixth annual running of the Pavement Hillclimb, an event that attracts circuit racers and canyon blasters from all over the west. Last year, crews had barely finished construction of a new underground fiber-optic line by the time of the event and riders had to contend with a narrow strip of patched asphalt the length of the road that often left a ragged edge right in the racing line. The road has since been completely resurfaced, making the going a bit smoother and a lot safer for the racers this year. As before, the winding three-mile course makes 37 turns and climbs 1000 feet in elevation on it's way from Donner Lake to the summit of the pass. A total of 70 riders took on the mountain, riding everything from vintage iron to current superbikes. Some of the Super TT riders ran their Motard bikes on the hill and this year saw more Karts and Legend Cars than ever. Saturday was timed practice with riders getting three or more runs up the hill to get acclimated. Sunday, they played for keeps and the times started dropping. Veteran Old Hwy 40 Hillclimber Cory Call turned in the quickest time of the weekend and topped the Superbike class with a pass of two minutes, 16.27 seconds on his Suzuki GSX-R 1000. David Francis' two minute, 19.66-second run on a Suzuki 750 was good for second overall and first Supersport. Once again, Mark" Jaws" Ingalls dominated the Buell Battle2win Challenge, taking the win on his M-2 1200 with a margin of just over two minutes. Jim Hoegerhyde took the singles class on a Honda AS-Hawk 540, and Jody Scott Hendley won the twins class on a H-D Sporty 1200. The Vintage classes are some of the most fun to watch. Peter Hipp was back to win the 350 class, riding a Honda CB350. Paul Shoen topped the 500cc class on his BSA, and Mike Simning burned up the pavement on his Kawasaki 750cc two-stroke triple to win the 750cc Class. The North American Hillclimb Association (NAHA) held round four of the FMF/Factory 909 NAHA Championship Hillclimb Series. Over 200 riders took a run at the 925-foot hill. This year, the High Sierra MC, headquartered in nearby Truckee and Reno and which normally hosts offroad events, provided much of the work and coordination. More brush and rocks were cleared from the course, hoses were strung to the top and the entire course was watered for three days before the event, greatly improving the conditions. Racing got underway on Saturday morning with Stock, Altered Stock, Vets, Four-Stroke, Old Timers, Seniors, Vintage and Women's classes. Afternoon saw the big bikes come out for their first pass as the ProAltered class ran. Sunday morning it got more serious as the Pro Senior and Pro Old Timers took the hill. Some of the most spectacular runs and quickest times came in the afternoon as the Exhibition classes ran. Almost anytime you looked up from the lodge deck or the other events, you could see a hillclimber making his way up the steep incline. For a closer look, the ski lift took spectators to the middle or top of the mountain where they could easily walk to good viewing positions. When the dust had settled, it was Dusty Beer with the overall victory in spite of a severed ACL suffered in a crash two weeks earlier at the Great American Hillclimb. Beer beat Travis Whitlock in the Pro-Altered classes and topped John Smith in the 0700cc Exhibition class, but Whitlock came back to take the wins in the Open and 250cc Exhibition runs. Lefty Frueh and Jeff Barger took top honors in the Pro Seniors and Pro Old Timers, respectively. skills against themselves and others on a tight, timed course. On Sunday, an Autocross style course was laid out in the parking lot where the Super TT was run the day before. Riders raced against the clock aboard everything from Go-Peds and pocket bikes to full-dress Harleys. Riders made over 300 runs through the course during the day Sunday, having fun while providing plenty of entertainment for the spectators on the nearby lodge deck. eN Donner SId hnch Donner, ClIlifllmie Results: August 11-1 Z, ZDOl Paved Hilklimb BATTl£2W1N CHAu.ENOE CUP: I.
