Also on the cover was an article regarding the protest issued to the AMA by Dick Mann concerning improper starting procedures at the Corona Dirt Track National. Mann's protest was upheld and he was issued the points he lost in the race, which moved him past theretofore points leader Gene Romero in the Grand National Championship. Romero did still hang on to second, though ... Brad Lackey returned to the Northem California MX action after a trip to Europe to win the Open Senior class, despite pretty serious bike problems - one of his rear shocks came off and his rearbrake rod was broken and dragging on the ground by the end of the second moto. 20 YEARS AGO.•. Parker was the focus, however I as he celebrated his record 41 st National Dirt Track victory at the Indy Mile. Previous record holder Jay Springsteen failed to make the main event... Rainey won the San Marino GP over polesitter Kevin Schwantz (Suz) and third-place Michael Doohan (Hon) ... Honda's Jean-Michel Bayle rode hard to beat Kawasaki's wily veteran Jeff Ward with 2-1 moto finishes. Ward's 1-2 was good enough for second. With the win, Bayle became the first man to ever win MX GPs in ell three classes... Kawasaki"mounted 16-y·ear-old Timmy Ferry won the 125cc Stock and Modified A classes at the Loretta Lynn's Amateur MX Championships. Jeff Gibson won the 5 J cc Stock (4-8) class, while other winners included Robbie Reynard (85cc Stock 12·13), Kevin Windham (85cc Mod. 9-13), Craig Decker (85cc Stock 14-15), Mike Metzger (85cc Modified 14-15), Jeff Dement (125cc B Stock, Modified) and Greg Rand (125cc Stock and Modified 12-15).
