The Hill Climb, also known as the Race to the Clouds, moved from its traditional running date of July 4 to June 30 in 2001. Race officials believe staging the race on a Saturday benefits all constituents, including the drivers, race teams, sponsors, fans and media as well as the Pikes Peak Highway, "This date selection is consistent with our agreement with the Pikes Peak Highway in as much that we realized the positive qualities of the date change that we all Ben Bostrom, Troy Bayliss, and Freddie Spencer are looking for fast women on Ducatis. Their press release stressed "that the program is designed for women who aim to race, and as there are only limited spaces available, we hope that all applicants have this in mind, .. expected," said Mike Clark, Hill Climb CEO. "While it wasn't without some trials, the June 30th date this year worked very well for our competitors, sponsors and for a great may of the fans, We expect the Saturday date to work even better in 2002." In its 79-year history, the race has been held on various dates, 23 times on Independence Day. But conflicts with the national holiday made the event increasingly more difficult to run. Race officials believe that attendance will continue to increase while planning and execution burdens remain logistically easier with a Saturday race. "Our agreement with the Highway calls for us to continue to study the positive and negative aspects of the date change," Clark said. "Right now, we're essentially very pleased with our event scheduled for the Saturday before July 3rd and we look forward to a successful r~ce on June 29, 2002."
