Starwest Motocross Park Mohr, Please! By MtKE AND BARBARA PALUZZI Arrowhead Speedway: Ryan Fisher (left) and Gary Hicks (both shown here leading Shawn McConnell In the Handicap main) traded wins at the Fourth of July event in San Bernardino, California; Asher won the Handicap main and Hicks won the Scratch main, with each placing runner-up to the other. worked his way up to fifth after a mediocre start by riding the wheels off his trusty Honda. Aboard his RM250, Williard duplicated his efforts in the 16-24 class. After an awesome start, Williard gained the lead, which he never relinquished. YZ riders Shaun Kuchler and Chris Leadbeater tried to keep Williard honest as they fought for second, with Kuchler getting the nod. Suzuki rider Wesley Boyd was fourth overall, and CR rider Biddle finished fifth. Chuck Hetrick took the top spot in the Over 30 A class and runner-up honors in the Over 40 class. Hetrick had a fairly easy go of it in the Over 30 A class, but in the Over 40 contest fellow YZ rider Bill Leake stormed around the natural-terrain circuit at a speed that Hetrick couldn't overcome. Third and fourth went to YZ250 riders Mark Matheis and Richard Biddle, respectively. In Over 30 B action, another YZ250 pilot, Gary Radominski, blasted into the lead, but his reign came to a quick end as CR250 rider Brian Gonser and RM250 pilot Rob Minton quickly took over the top two spots. Gene O'Nail, also on a YZ250, was next to dispatch Radominski, after which the holeshot specialist took a soii sample and eventually finished well behind the leaders. The top three stayed the same to the finish, followed across the checkers by YZ250 rider Rob Miracle and Honda rider Jamey Johnson. Mark Burkhart dominated the 125cc A class. Burkhart took the holeshot and disappeared. Fellow YZ250F rider Craig Clements was runner-up. There was a mighty battle for third between Yamaha thumper ace Travis Hartshorn and KX125-mounted Mark Weaver, who managed to counter all of Hartshorn's efforts and hold the position. Over 25 A victor Dale Slabaugh filled out the top five. Despite an uncharacteristically poor start, Burkhart returned to conquer the 250cc A class. the second lap and went down in two, and that was all Fisher needed, as he took the lead and put about half a track between himself and the rest of the field. Hjcks wasn't letting any grass grow under his feet, but the distance was just too great to make up and he had his hands full holding off Ermolenko. Schwartz was fourth, waiting to take adl(antage of the slightest mis- take. Estes was trying to catch up and, McConnell was watching from the infield. They finished in that order. The Division II main went right down to the checkered flag, with Bill Ewing holding off Ron Woodsford for the win by a tire's width. Billy Lyons was third. Division II B honors went to Shane Kump, who topped Scott Tidwell and Billy Braden. Justin Boyle won the Junior Speedway event. In his first time out, Troy McConnell showed everyone that he will be following in the footsteps of his dad, Shawn McConnell, by placing second. Rounding out the field was Ricky Wells. The Harley riders had their time in the spotlight - and in the wall, and on the ground as they played in the dirt with their very expensive machinery. R••ult. SCR: 1. aery HIcks (Jaw): 2. St_ Los Angeles County Raceway Caselli, Ward Whip 'em at LACR By GREa ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,JULY14 The Yamaha-mounted duo of Kurt Caseili and Bryon Ward swept the 250cc Intermediate and Novice classes, respectively, during the Ante· R••ults UNVIUE, OH, JULY 13 More than 300 riders were treated to a perfect track at the sixth round of Honda Hills' Friday Night Series. Andy Williard utilized a couple of different weapons in his assault on two classes, taking Mark Burkhart's YZ250F to a convincing victory in the 125cc B class and backing that up with a win in the 16-24 class aboard his RM250. Williard snared the 125cc B holeshot astride the borrowed YZ250F and never looked back. Though normally mounted on his 'Zook, Williard looked comfortable on the Yamaha thumper. As Williard stretched his lead, a battle for the next four positions erupted. Honda piiot Eric Biddle settled into second, while YZ125 rider Tayior Sky Harmon battled for third with Suzuki rider Josh Rice. Due to a fine start, Rice had the position early on, but he began to really feel the heat from Harmon, who made his move about halfway and set his sights on Biddie. However, Biddle managed to hang on to the runner-up position. Harmon and Rice were followed across the line by CR 125 rider Mikey Nibert, who 62 MORENO VALLEY, CA, JULY 14 The last round of the Redline Bicycle Series at Starwest was a night to remember for many riders. Not only did the winners walk away with a championship, but they also rode away on a new Redline BMX bike. Putting in two perfect motos in the 80cc (12-13) division was iocal favorite Shawn Mohr. In the first moto, Mohr naiied the holeshot, with Michael Raines close behind. Raines' attempts to make a pass on Mohr came to a premature end when he stalled his bike in the tum and allowed Gil Esquivel and motocross legend Marty Smith's son Tyler to get by. Mohr cruised in for the win, followed by Esquivel and Smith. In the second moto, Mohr again took the early lead, with Raines and Esquivel close behind. Mohr picked up the pace quickly and was able to get a good lead ahead of the rest of the pack. Meanwhile, Raines was able to hold off Esquivel for second. Mohr took the checkered flag, followed by Raines and Esquivel. Danny Gonzales was unstoppable in the younger 80cc (0-11) division, taking two moto wins, followed by Dennis Soriano and Jake Mendenhall. The 125cc Beginner contest was a battle to the end, as the champion of this class was to receive the "Branson Prize Package" con· sisting of free Branson gate and entry race fees to one of the most exciting motocross National races of the year. In the first moto, Joey Dobson led the Beginners around the first turn, with Mark Cowgill close behind. Dobson was able to pull away from the pack, leaving Cowgill and Jeff Edelblute to fight for second. Lap after lap, Edelblute was almost touching Cowgill's back tire, but he was unable to find a line around for the pass. Dobson took the win, followed by Cowgill and Edelblute. Brock Erwin shot out of the gate like a rocket with the second-moto holeshot, followed by Dobson and Cowgill. Taking advantage of his early lead, Erwin kept his momentum going and never looked back. Dobson was riding a strong second, and Cowgill ran third until a slide-out let Clinton Castleberry by to take the last podium position. Erwin took the win, followed by Dobson and Castleberry. Although Cowgill was unable to pull off the overall win, as he had the previous three weeks, he still leads the series with the most points and was able to claim his prize and the championship.
