Montgomery, Alabama's James Morrison pulled the holeshot in race two on his CR250. Carroll was running second but fell in tum two. Heisler used an inside pass to get by Morrison. Sanders dropped Morrison to second on lap two. The three riders held their positions to the finish. Charging the entire distance, Carroll caught Davy Duprel on the last lap for fourth place. In combined Vet B/C/Over 40 action, Greg Cole grabbed the start in race one. Kenny Casey and Kevin Davis doubled past Cole at the same time. In his second race at Dixie, Cole fought back and regained the point in the next tum. Davis went back out front in the back section. Casey passed Cole on lap two. At the finish, Davis led Casey, Phil Sanders, and KX250-mounted Hardy. Casey and his Bruhn Cycles VOR 503 outpowered the field to the first tum in race two. Davis drove past Cole in the early going for second. Hardy slipped past Cole on lap two. Davis pressured Casey the rest of the way but couldn't find a way past. Hardy and Sanders picked up another third and fourth. Re.ults P/VI (4-6): I. Evan Smith (Cob); 2. Byra'l Dillard (Cob); 3. Joey Smith (KTM); 4. Justin Paschal (Hon). P/VI (7·9): \. Moreland's Motocross Minis Manhandle Moreland's MX By BART NEWMAN STANTON, MI, JULY 14 Hometown hero Grant Moreland was the king of the Minis, topping all comers as he rode away with a double-moto overall in the 85cc (12-15) class. Moreland's MX played host to a large crowd of District 14 riders, who were treated to an old-school layout with some new-age twists thrown in for excitement. Moreland timed the starting gate just right in moto one to lead the pack around tum one. Hot on his heels were Corey Slavik, Adam Harden, Jordan Dryer and Josh Radi. Moreland soon had a small cushion over Slavik, who in turn held an advantage over Harden. Radi passed Dryer and set sail after Harden. Moreland continued to open up a lead on Slavik, who was riding strong enough in sec· ond to pull away from Harden, who was in control of third but still off of Moreland's pace. At the end of the six-lap moto, the order looked the same, with Moreland taking the win over Slavik, Harden, Radi and Dryer. In moto two, Slavik got the jump off the line, but exiting tum one, Moreland was out front again and on the move. Slavik did not give up without a fight, and he hounded Moreland in every tum for the first two laps before Moreland opened up a little breathing room. Harden was going good in third, holding off Radi and Dryer as the three worked hard to close the gap on the two leaders. When the checkered fiag came out, Moreland had yet another moto win. Slavik was second, not far off the pace. Harden wrapped up third, while Radi and Dryer rounded out the top five spots. Blake Wickerham roared to the front of the 80cc (7-11) group, with Trevor Donie second and Brad Kiester holding third. Alex Hotchkiss and John Jackson fought it out in a heated battle over fourth. As the riders reappear from the back of the track on lap three, Wickerham 60 AUGUST 22,2001 • cue • e was under fire from Donie, who was being pushed hard by Kiester. Jackson used good lines and long jumps to move past Kiester, putting him back to fourth. With one lap to go, Donie got around Wickerham for first, and Jackson moved into second after Wickerham bobbled. At the end, it was Donie with the win, followed by Jackson, Wickerham, Kiester and Alex Hllslop, who round out the top five after a forgettable start but a great ride. In the second moto, Wickerham was again out front first. Kiester was up next, with Jackson, Donie and Hotchkiss all up front again_ Wickerham was not going to be denied this time around, and he rode away to a flawless moto win. Donie was second, making Kiester and Jackson check out the rear wheel of his RM. Kiester was challenged throughout the moto by Jackson but still held on to third, with Jackson and Hotchkiss filling out the top five. Re.ults 50 BEG: I. T~ Me:rlington (Yam); 2. Sarona Oaks Sutton Sweeps Bv PETER GOLDEN RAMONA, CA, JULY 15 Larry Sutton is the new top dog in the 125cc Novice class. The recent moves of Marcos Reyes and Justin Herrmann up to the Intermediate ranks left the Novice pecking order up for grabs. In moto one, all seven riders tore up the hill in tight formation, with Sutton's YZ running point. Yamaha-powered Anthony Charette and Honda pilot David Ewing sandwiched themselves between Sutton's rear fender and the other four riders. Sutton gained a few feet of dirt on the downhill, but he was still only a bobble away from last place. Over the small triple into the back section and out of the sandwash, no one was gaining or giving up any ground. Sutton finally started to inch away on lap two, while YZ-mounted James Harries moved on Ewing for the pass from fourth to third and set his sights on Charette. Sutton continued to increase his lead on lap three, while Harries was searching for a line around Charette. Harries got by Charette on lap four and was actually closing on Sutton but, with less than a lap to go, it was all for show. At the checkers, it was Sutton, Harries, Charette, Ewing and Yamaha jockey Eric Rizzo who owned the top five spots. In moto two, the gate went bang and Sutton went bye-bye, but this time it was RM- neVIl's mounted Novice newcomer Bo Schwenke who grabbed the number-two spot, leaving the rest of the pack to sort things out. Harries slid into third, ahead of Charette and Ewing. Sutton was determined not to let anyone near him this time and by the end of lap two he had a 10-second lead on Schwenke, who was watching his lead over Harries dwindle. Harries went down hard after coming up short off the double out of the sandwash whoops and was out of contention. Meanwhile, Ewing made a bold pass on Charette over the infield double to grab the number-three spot, leaving Charette just ahead of Honda pilot Robert Golden and Rizzo, who were quarrelling over fifth place. Golden finally settled the dispute with Rizzo by quadding through the infield whoops, and then he focused his attention on Charette. On the final lap, Sutton and Schwenke were unchallenged, and Ewing was losing time to Charette, who in tum was losing time to Golden. Rizzo went down three turns before the checkers but qUickly remounted, while Harries waited at the finish line to avoid a DNF. At the checkers, it was Sutton, Schwenke, Ewing, Charette and Golden. 125 NOV: 1. Larry Sutton (Yam): 2. Dennil Ellling (Hon): 3. Anthony Charette (Yom): 4.
