WERA Vintage Road Racing Round 10: Road AUanta Joyce Goes Hog Wild By BRASELTON, GA, JULY 11 bsent from WERA Vintage racing this year, Keith Campbell brought his Hour Glass Racing Team to the midseason double-points event at Road Atlanta. Campbell acquired Tin: Joyce to ride one of his XR750TT Harley-Davidsons. The Fort Walton Beach resident is usually seen riding Triumphs but jumped at the chance to ride the fast Harley at this horsepower track. The buzz in the pits was that the match-up between Joyce and "Fast Frank" Shockley in the Vintage Four event was going to be the race to watch. With the horsepower of the Harley, Joyce might have a shot at beating Shockley's fast Triumph, which has dominated here the past two years. Not only was this race a crowd-pleaser, but several of the races were very exciting, with one race being decided by inches and another producing yet another firsttime winner. Hour Glass Racing's Kyle Campbell (Keith's son) lined up the Drixton 350cc Honda in Vintage One, against current champion Buff Harsh on the Todd Henning-backed Honda and Eric Cook, just off his first win in South Carolina. Harsh snagged the lead and was apparently off to his usual runaway win. On lap three, Harsh's left muffler bracket broke and the pipe was dragging. Starter Chuck Edgeworth black-flagged him and the race was over for the champ. In Campbell's fourth race ever, the Clemson University student had positioned himself in a very strong second, quite a distance in front of the A Mills Road Motocross Park: Mark Gerloff was a busy man at the Stars Over Texas Night series opener: He won five of the six motos he raced, taking first overall in the 250cc Expert, Over 25 Expert and Over 30 Expert classes. Back up front, McKiddie was enjoying a large lead over Childers and Crosby. Behind the three, Travis Daffern had made his move on Ogradowicz for fourth. They finished in that order, with Germany finishing sixth. Randy Childers took the holeshot in the second moto, but McKiddie was in hot pursuit early. Childers led McKiddie for the first lap, followed by Crosby and Germany in third and fourth, respectively. McKiddie took over the lead on the second lap and never looked back. Germany passed Crosby to take over third and set out after Childers. Childers held off Germany to take second, behind McKiddie. Germany's 6-3 score was good for fourth overall, behind Crosby (3-4). The 125cc Beginner class was the largest of the night. With 40 riders and only 34 gates, qualifying determined who went to the main and who went home early. In the main, Eric Cegielski took the early lead and avoided the first pile-up that claimed a large part of the field. Behind Cegielski, Josh Watson and Chris Simmons were running second and third, respectively. On the second lap, Jack Johnson was on the move. He rounded the first lap in seventh and charged up to fourth. Stephen Baker followed Johnson around Brian Miedke, sending the CCRA/Gas Brothers Racing rider back to sixth. By the end of the third lap, Cegielski had a comfortable lead over Watson. Johnson and Baker had moved into third and fourth, respectively. Chris Parkerson had silently moved into fifth after a slow start that had him outside the top 10 after the first lap. His charge was not over until the lap last, when he passed Baker for fourth, where he would finish. Cegielski took the checkers, opening up the series with a big win. Watson took second overall and Johnson rounded out the top three. CJIII 56 AUGUST 22,2001 • cue •• Mills Road Motocrass Park Houlton, Texas Results: July 14, 2001 [Round 1 of 51 51 (4·6): I. Campbell continued to stretch out his advantage and captured his first win, much to his dad's delight. The battle for second went down to the last lap, when Schulte passed Cook in the first turn. Schulte held second until the back stretch, when Cook drafted past and held it to the flag. In the concurrent Formula 500 race, MRA's Mark Morrow and Quick Bikes' Dick Gruhn fought all race long for the lead, not more than a bike length apart. On lap five, the two were neck and neck. Gruhn made his move in turn 10 as they approached the downhill and turned for home. Morrow stayed outside and drove past Gruhn to take the win by about two inches. The race everyone was waiting for, Vintage Four, blasted off the line and Touring Sport BMW-backed Triumph rider Shockley grabbed the early lead, with Joyce in close pursuit. As they pulled away from the big field, Joyce stayed on Shockley's tail for two laps, pulling even sometimes, but he couldn't get around. Joyce finally got the advantage in turn five and he slipped past. Once in front, Joyce began to open up a slim lead. Joyce eventually opened up a four-bike lead and held it to the finish. Shockley remained second, over Doug Bowie on the 650cc Ducati. In Formula Two-Stroke, Morrow took his third win of the day, over Drew Lipport and Robert Newby. Harsh was back to his old self, running away from the field in Vintage Two, over Campbell and John Rickard. Road Atlanta: In only his fourth race ever, Hour Glass Racing's Kyle Campbell captured his first win at WERA Vintage's midseason double-pointer event In Braselton, Georgia. Campbell is a full-time student at Clemson University.
