The KTM team manager finished in eighth place, at one stage even dicing with Vico Garcia and Andrew McFarlane for fourth. As the pace quickened in the late stages of the race. Nicoll tired and dropped back. Roggenburg is a favorite track for Nicoll. who led England to victory there in the 1994 Motocross des Nations. ending the U.S. win streak. race, even giVing Everts a serious entering the race a long way behind challenge for second. the field. In other des Nations news. it is likely that the German MXdN team will include Pit Beirer in the 250cc class and Bernd Eckenbach on a 500. The country's first choice for the 125cc ride was Marco Dorsch. but the young KTM rider fell at the Swiss GP. injuring his hip and shoulder. It now looks like Josef Dobes will ride the 125cc-c1ass bike in Namur. The Italian MXdN team now looks likely to be Alessio Chiodi on the 125. Claudio Federici on the 250 and Andrea Bartolini on the 500. This is a return to the same team that took victory at the 1999 des Nations in Brazil. Paul Cooper has been put on the list of potentiai candidates for the British MXdN team. though a complete British lineup won't be known for two weeks. It is unlikely Cooper will make the final lineup. as he is in a form slump. It is still expected that Jamie Dobb will move to the 500cc bike. with Carl Nunn on the 250 and Stephen Sword on the 125. (Top) Though he failed to win, Stefan Everts (top) put in a steady runner-up perfonnance. That, combined with the 17th-place result of primary titlecontender Joel Smets, put Everts in prime position to wrap up his first !500cc title In the next couple of rounds. (Left) The 2!50cc runner-up was Gordon Crockard, the Irishman recovering well from a terrible start. Stefan Everts and Mamicq Bervoets have re·signed for the Rinaldi Yamaha team. while the other 500cc rider. Andrew McFarlane. looks likely to move to the 250cc class for Rinaldi. Everts, who has returned to his best form. is happy to spend another year with Yamaha. "I thought serio ausly about [racing in] America: Everts said .• Still. deep down in my heart. I would have loved to done a year racing the Nationals. Now. though. I think it's too late; it's more important to win World Championships for me.• Josh Coppins will leave the Corona Suzuki team at the end of the year. The New Zealander has been offered a ride in the Open class. but the most likely scenario for him is to remain in the 250cc division. either with the Free Time Yamaha team (as a replacement for departing French· man Yves Demaria). or possibly with the Kawasaki team (as a replacement for departing Aussie Chad Reedl. Two-moto format: Mickael Pichon has indicated that he wants to race two classes In the 2002 World Championship Motocross Series - contesting both the 125 and 250cc divisions at each GP. It appears that several other riders are also interested in contesting more than one class. Joel Smets included. Next year's Grand Prix calendar will be ready in around a month. and it is understood that only two races will go outside Europe. The Australian Grand Prix and the Malaysian Grand Prix will be run in mid-April. although rumors in Australia have the Grand Prix not returning to the Broadford site, which is the circuit that hosted the last two Aussie GPs. It is also understood that Belgium will" only- receive two GPs next year. one in Namur and the other at the road·racing facility in Zolder. Another new venue likely to be included is Loket in the Czech Republic. while England will again miss out on a Grand Prix despite several of the major teams being British. Frederic Bailey has tested the new Honda CRF450R four-stroke. and he is nearly sure he will race it in next year's 500cc World Championships. -I need new motivation: Bailey said. "The bike is very nice to ride, and I look forward to testing it on a real motocross track."
