Many of the crowd were first-time spectators to Speedway, but all got into the spirit of the evening. It was bittersweet, as Charlie "The Edge" Venegas had to let go of another one of the trophies he captured last year. To get to the Scratch main and get a shot at the Fair Derby, riders have to move up the program. Larsen won the first Scratch semi, followed by "Gorgeous" Gary Hicks. Reno's "Flyin'" Mike Faria and Jim Estes were on their way to the Last Chance Qualifier.
