Kawasaki Volunteer State Championship U. S. Mega Series Round 11: Muddy Creek Raceway Wiley battled Truman in moto two but crashed and could only manage to finish 10th. eN Muddy Creek Raceway Blountville, Tennessee Results: July 7-8, 2001 [Round 111 By STEVE AND PEGGY CORLEE BLO(JNTVILLE, TN, J(JLY 7-8 he 17th annual Kawasaki Volunteer State Championship certainly lived up to its billing, as riders aboard the green machines took victories in both Pro classes and several Amateur classes as well. Riders from 14 states attended this prestigious event and the racing action was intense, as this was the last major meeting in the Southeast before the Loretta Lynn's finale in August. Promoter Sam Gammon and his top-notch Muddy Creek staff pulled out all the stops in an attempt to provide the best racing facility possible, and their efforts were extremely successful. Race sponsor Kawasaki spared neither expense nor effort to ensure the success of this year's event. On hand to oversee the event was Team Green's motocross supervisor, Craig Martin, and of course technician Jeff Chambers and the Team Green support van. In addition, Suzuki's "Jersey Joe" Costa was trackside in the Suzuki support van. In Pro racing, Florida's James Stewart pulled out two stunning victories in the 125cc class, and a recovering Shae Bentley took the 250cc overall after first-moto winner Kevin Walker stalled his four-stroke while leading moto two. Stewart and Bentley both learned a lesson that many other Pro riders who have come before have learned; and that is when you come to Muddy Creek, invariably you must deal with Kevin Walker, which is no easy task. When the gate dropped in the first 125cc Pro race, Stewart grabbed the lead immediately and began to disappear. Bentley held down second but came under immediate pressure from Walker. Michigan's Nick Vaughn held down fourth, and North Carolina's William Bryant was trying to defend fifth from a determined Ben Riddle. As Stewart motored away out front, Bentley and Walker were going toe to toe, and Riddle moved up to fourth. By lap five, Stewart had a 15-second lead on the pack and the BentleyWalker duel had cooled somewhat. On the white-flag lap, Walker stalled and quickly restarted, dropping to fourth. The moto ended with Stewart 22 seconds ahead of Bentley, followed by Rjddle, Walker and Robbie Horton, who had steadily mo~ed up during the last few laps. Moto two began with a holeshot by Walker, followed closely by Riddle and Stewart. At the beginning of lap two, Stewart found an inside line and T 40 AUGUST 15, 2001 • cue. e (Right) Highly skilled and equally determined, Kevin Walker (859) is a threat to take the win anywhere he races. Following a win in the first 250cc Pro mota in Blountville, Tennessee, Walker tumed in an amazing ride in mota two, coming from last to fifth. (Above) Ja..... SWwart Jr. (259) leads the pack through Muddy Creek Raceway's first tum. He easily topped the 125cc A and Schoolboy clanes. (Left) Following an Injury-plagued supercross . ._n, a fully recovered Shae Bentley (104) went 2-2 to gamer the overall 250cc A-class wln at round 11 of the U.S. Mega Series. passed Walker for the lead. At the same time, Bentley, who had been following Riddle close!y, made his move and took over third. By lap three, Stewart was enjoying a six-second lead over Walker and the rest. On lap five, Bentley used the same inside line that Stewart had to pass Walker and moved to second. Rjddle, who had been cruising in fourth, then came under fire from a charging Josh Summey. Stewart continued to pull away until moto's end and finished well ahead of Bentley, Walker, Riddle and Summey. The King of Muddy Creek, Robbie Horton, could only manage to move to eighth place in the second moto, however, ruining his chances for a good overall finish. Stewart does not compete in the 250cc class, so that left his teammate Bentley to carry the Kawasaki banner to the top of the podium. Walker had other ideas, however, and when the gate dropped, he immediately took the lead, followed by Summey, Jason Fink, Horton and North Carolina's Chad Lough. However, Walker's lead n e _ so was short-lived, as he again stalled his four-stroke, handing the lead to Summey. Meanwhile, Horton moved into second, ahead of Fink. While Summey continued to motor away, the action heated up back in the pack. On lap three, Horton crashed out and Bentley simultaneously moved into third. Meanwhile, Walker had restarted and was inside the top 10. Riddle then passed Troy Adams and took over third as Bentley displaced Fink for second. Fink then dropped to fourth as Adams moved up. The moto ended with Summey taking the win, followed by Bentley, Adams, Riddle and an amazing ride from the back to fifth by Walker. At day's end, Bentley secured the overall, ahead of Walker, Summey, Adams and Riddle. Fink, Hans Neel, Paul Justus, Horton and Kentucky's Devin Bank filled out the top 10. The B classes showcased some of the finest talent in. the eastern part of the country. In the 125cc B class, Kentucky's Jacob Saylor spHt moto wins with Florida's Donald McGourty, with the overall going to Saylor. Indiana's Shawn Clark (5-3) was third overall, over Florida's Dan Truman (3-5). Truman came back to overall the 250cc B class with a 2-1 score, besting North Carolina's Mike Clampitt.
