"A decent ride, but I just didn't get it done," Watson said. "It came up on a little wheelie and I had to back off rider error. I should have lengthened it and left it on and went for it. I blew it." Disbennett also ran slower on his second try, but he ended up fourth behind Watson in the final standings, ahead of libhart. Large rolled the big Harley to the line, looking for a better run. "It's a good thing I'm the only rider they [Reiser's] have, or they would have fired me after that first ride," Large said. Large lined up on the left near where Watson rode but he was on line as he flew toward the Ledge. He stayed low over the jump and flew far enough to clear the little kicker, then he blasted past the lights to beat Thomas' time by .001 of a second, a 5.3950 to a 5.3960. "1 get to keep my ride, I guess," Large joked after his time was announced. Brandon Kreeger had the last ride, but he wasn't able to catch Large and the Harley-Davidson rider had his first win on the new bike. "Randy Gabriel and I were looking at that line before Watson tried it and it worked out great," Large said. "It got a little squirrelly a couple of times on the bottom, but I left it on because I knew I had to get up there. Tom and Russ and Clayton, all those guys worked hard changing jets and gearing and it worked out beautiful." Thomas was disappointed, but he knows it's a long series. "To lose by a thousandth of a second is tough," Thomas said. "But we took a second and a third so we'll just try and get that 800 win next week. I can still walk, so we'll just try harder next time." eN lireasy IIidlle NRieReI Haydenville, lillie Results: July 28, 2001 8oo(c; I. James Large (H-D); 2. Jeff Thomlls (H-D): 3.
