ow soon we forget. Life after racing for Yesterday's Hero is the
hardest haul - making the switch
from being a champion of the present
to a legend of the past is a challenge
of character not all can comfortably
address. For many a key player in
bike racing's major leagues, accommodating the adjustment from being
at one moment the hero of on-track
action, who's adulated by the public
and respected by rivals, to in the next·
breath becoming a bit-part supporting act to the main event, is even
harder to achieve than becoming
champion in the first place - as many
examples whom it's perhaps kinder
not to mention by name, will uncomfortably attest to.
A favorite way of easing into
retirement from on-track competition
is to become a team manager, a ploy
