Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship Round 7: Blackwater 50 Wuebbeling Tastes BlackV\Tater Victory By After lap one, Wuebbeling held a lei'ld of 45 seconds over Shaw, who in turn was just three seconds ahead of Nesbitt. Another three seconds back was XR650R Honda-mounted Matt Pursley, followed by Mike Windmann, Duncan and Leivan, who was 58 seconds down from the leader. As Wuebbeling continued to pull away, Leivan was on the move, although he was still losing time to the leader. "When I got the board [after the first lap 1 and saw that I was a minute down, I knew I had to get going," Leivan recounted. "The track was so tight, though, I was having trouble making passes. I got three 'freebies' . the second lap when Bobby [Duncan). Pursley and Mikey [Windmann] all made mistakes, but when they fell, the trail was so tight that I had to go off through the brush to get around them. Each pass gained me a position, but also cost me more time." Wuebbeling had extended his lead by lap's end to just over a minute and a half on Shaw, who was still holding off Nesbitt. Leivan was right on their tails, and when Nesbitt stopped for goggles and gas going into lap three, Leivan moved into third. Fifth overall at the midpoint of the event was Rusty Reynaud, who was leading the A class. Reynaud, who won overall series championships in 1986 and 1991, was making a cameo appearance and showing the kids that he still knows how to twist it. FRANK LEIVAN MARSHFIELD, MO; JUNE 24 t a very tight and technical round seven of the Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship, Ryan Wuebbeling recorded the first overall series victory of his career. The KTM 300 rider took the lead early and broke away from the pack and was never seriously challenged. Although the Blackwater 50 didn't actually live up to its name in terms of mud and bogs, it was still a very challenging event. The course measured 9.8 miles and consisted of mostly very tight, rocky, single-track trails. The tight nature of the trail kept speeds low; Wuebbelings' average over four laps was just 18.5 mph. Team Green/Castrol/Moose/Pro Circuit rider Chris Nesbitt and Yamaha-mounted Aaron Shaw argued over holeshot honors, with Nesbitt getting the nod. Wuebbeling got going in third, with Bobby Duncan and Steve Leivan rounding out the top five. A couple of early miscues by Leivan dropped him to seventh, where he stayed the entire opening lap. Wuebbeling got by Shaw quickly and stayed glued to Nesbitt. Midway through the lap, Wuebbeling got his chance and took over the lead. Nesbitt stayed close for a couple of miles while the five riders behind him rode in a tight pack. A 52 AUGUST 8, 2001 cue I e n e _ s Shaw held off Leivan for half of lap three, but SCR/Yamaha/Scott/UFO/ Flatland Racing-backed Leivan was putting together a charge on his WR426F, and he found a way around in a creek bed. As Wuebbeling headed out for the final lap, Leivan had whittled just over 40 seconds off the deficit, which meant that Wuebbeling had a oneminute cushion with just under 10 miles to go in the race. Shaw and Nesbitt were still battling and hanging dangerously close to Leivan while they fought over third. Just as it appeared that Leivan was gaining time and may have had a shot at the win, he got into trouble with a lapped rider. "My pit guy, Justin, was out in the woods about halfway through the lap, and he let me know I was within about 20 seconds," Leivan said. "I was hoping I still had time to catch Ryan, but I got messed up with another rider. I djdn't fall, but I had to get off and push, and Aaron and Chris caught me. After that, I was trying to be careful, since I knew if I made another mistake, I could end up fourth." Up front, Wuebbeling made no such mistakes and took the checkered flag to record his first win. As the GNCC series is on a summer break, it appears that Wuebbeling will shake up the running order for the next couple of months. Despite his last-lap troubles, Leivan turned in the fastest lap of the day, a 30:32, on his way to second overall. Although he saw his five-race winning streak come to an end, the day was not all bad, as Leivan gained points on all of the riders who factor into the series points battle. Nesbitt claimed the final podium spot, taking advantage when Shaw collided with a lapped rider just a mile from the finish. Shaw was up in time to salvage fourth. Qale Rector rounded out the top five on his way to the A-class win. CN Blackwater 50 Marshfield. Missouri Resuln: June 24, 2001 [Round 7] O/A: 1. Ryan Wuebbeling (KTM); 2. Steve Leivan (Yam); 3. CCS Florida Region Homestead-Miami Speedway Prieto Dominates HOlDestead By LISA THEOBALD HOMESTEAD, FL, JUNE 24 hane Prieto dominated at Homestead with five victories, including the highly competitive Unlimited Grand Prix. In the Shootout, Marco Martinez nabbed the holeshot at the drop of the green flag, but the pack was tight on his tail as they charged through turn one. Prieto was up to second 'place on the next lap, with Rick Narup, John Ashmead, Mike Luke, John Dierickx and John-O Bowman close behind. By lap three, Prieto had about a 30-bike-length lead over Martinez, and for the last half of the race, all the way to the checkers, none of the top 10 riders swapped positions. The Prieto Racing Inc./Custom Glass Company/Pirelli/GMD/Computrack-sponsored Prieto also won the S GTO, GTU, Middleweight Supersport and Heavyweight Supersport contests. After crashing in the Middleweight Superbike race, he finished 14th. The top three Shootout riders also went to battle in the GTO. Martinez led the first two laps after nailing another holeshot, but by lap three, Prieto was out front and pulling away. Narup also maneuvered around Martinez to take over second. Prieto ran all by himself to the checkered flag. He was followed by Narup, Martinez, Ashmead and Luke. Martinez was out front again at the start of the GTU, with Prieto right behind. On the second lap, Prieto dived underneath Martinez on the inside of turn one to take the lead. Luke was hot on their tails. Prieto was unable to open a gap on Martinez this time, leading by only about 10 bike
