the paint off the pipe trying to go even lower and tighter in an early duel with Larsen. Throughout the round-two heats, Schwartz, Hicks and Fisher were steadily going about their business, winning or finishing second in virtually all of their respective races. After a case of jitters on Friday, New Yorker Rafferty settled down on Saturday. The teenager from Binghamton had a number of good round. two heat performances, and his game will be elevated considerably after running with the likes of Schwartz, Oxley, Ermolenko et. al. Champion Speedway owner Jason Bonsignore spent six figures over the winter renovating Champion, building a world-class speedway venue in the process. And as the round-two semis and main approached, he christened his new crash wall in spectacular fashion. Bonsignore laid down his bike at speed at the end of the front straight, resulting in a Jawa-sized hole in the fresh new plywood. Usually the guests smash up the joint at a party this size; this time, the owner did the honors. Sephton kept the New York flag flying in round two with a win, a pair of seconds and a third in his heat races, ending the night with a respectable third-place finish in the evening's first semi. After the LCQ was won by Cook with a brilliant laser-guided holeshot move from the outer limits of gate four, the main came down to Hicks, Fisher, Larsen, Schwartz and Cook five pretenders to the throne, but only one would be king. Hicks nailed the holeshot and it was all over. Larsen tried his best to catch the leader, but the one-line track bias was too strong. Cook hung on to round out the podium, with Fisher and Schwartz completing the order of finish. After a champagne soaking on the podium, Hicks thanked the New York fans and host Jason Bonsignore, who put his heart and soul into making the inaugural AMA King of U.S. Speedway Series a success.
