He was 80 years old. Taglioni was born in Lugo di Romagna on September 10, 1920. His father, Biagio, was an engineer who owned a workshop, where he passionately devoted himself to repairing engines and, in particular, race engines. It was here that Taglioni first developed his passion and talent for mechanical engineering. After finishing high school, he studied engineering at the University of Bologna. However, with the beginning of WWII in 1940, his studies were interrupted when he was drafted. It was during the war, in 1942, that he married Norina, his lifelong companion for the next 60 years. After the war, in 1948, he received his degree in mechanical engineering for his thesis on the desmodromic valve control system. While working as a professor at the Alberghetti College in Imola, he created with his students his first motorcycle, a 48cc bike called the "Tomado." The project caught the eye of the managing director of the motorcycle manufacturer FB Mondial, and Taglioni was hired as director of the racing department. While working at FB Mondial, his talents were noticed by the general director of Ducati, Giuseppe Montano, and on April I, 1954 Taglioni began recently rode under the Amsoil/Dr. Martensl Journeys/Competition Accessories-sponsored team in the 2001 Supercross Series, finishing with a 15thplace ranking in the west region. Originally from Ramona, California, Billy Laninovich has been riding in the 125cc Pro class for a year. Prior to entering the Pro class, Billy rode in the 125cc Intermediate class for two years. In 1998, Billy won the first night of racing in the 80cc class at the U.S. Open, which was a big launching point for his racing career. Returning to the KTM/Red Bull racing team for 2002 is first-time KTM Supercross 125cc main-event winner (Dallas) and 2000 World 125cc Motocross Champion Grant Langston. The 1gyear-old will continue to ride in the Western Region dUring the 2002 Super- his lasting career with Ducati. Taglioni's contribution to Ducati Ilist"ry and the Ducati legacy are incomparable. At the beginning of his career with Ducat!, the company was building small motorcycles for an Italian market that was crippled by the war. By the time of his departure in 1989, Ducati was well known around the world for its quality sportbikes. The bikes designed by Taglioni were not only technically advanced, they also possessed unequaled beauty and charm. During his 40-year career at Ducati, TagJioni developed over 1000 different engines, ranging from small bikes to supercharged racing bikes. However, his name will forever be remembered in the world of motorcycles for his desmodromic system, the unique valve-control system still in use today in all Ducati engines. Taglioni was the first to successfully apply this technology to motorbikes. "Dr. T, as Taglioni was known by Ducatisti, bestowed on our bikes the sophisticated mechanics and technology which distinguish them on an intemational stage, and which render them unbeatable on the racetrack" said Carlo Di Biagio, Ducati Chief Executive Officer, in a Ducati press release. "Without Taglioni's ingenuity and invaluable contribution to Ducati, it would be a very different company today. We will remember him with great affection_.. cross series. Brock Sellards of New Philadelphia, Ohio. will also return as an Eastern Region Supercross rider in 2002 for Team KTM. Sellards had numerous podium finishes in the 2001 Supercross series and is currently in the top '0 in the Outdoor National Motocross series. According to a press release from Don Schneider, Moto XXX/Atomic 22/DGY's Michael Brandes will race a 500cc Vertemati at round eight of the AMA Western Four-Stroke Nationals in Clarkia, Idaho, August 5. The release also stated that Thousand Oaks Yamaha/Pete's RV/Reynard Modification's Robbie Reynard has tested the Vertemati thumper as well, and that he intends to contest the event (August 5 is an offweekend from the AMA Nationals). 0 contest the rerun, but English referee Mike Posselwhite had excluded Loram. The Englishman never recovered from this and finished on five points, 12th in the World Championship table after three rounds and battling for a top-10 place to avoid going into the Grand Prix Challenge in October. A victorious Rickardsson said, "I'm delighted to have won my second successive Grand Prix, but I have a long way to go. When I'm doing those extra pressups during training, I make myself think of what it would mean to me to win this year's World Championship in Stockholm."
