push to the top were rewarded with threes. Bell, Crosset, Crosswaite and Aaron took threes there. Section 12 was an interesting section. A very tough climb with several turns was followed by a large log suspended off the ground in a slippery creek bed. The problem was that the riders needed a good drive to leap over the log, but the slippery creek didn't provide enough traction. Bell cleaned the section up to the log but didn't have a good enough approach to finish. Aaron had the ride of the day here with a well-placed one. Crosset endoed over the log, resulting in a five, but he returned with a pair of ones on the last two laps. Crosswaite had a day to forget. After receiving a five in section six for crossing his tracks, the 22-year-old ripped his rear-brake line loose on a steep climb in section eight, leaving him with no brakes for the vertical dec~nt on the other side. The Scorpa pilot nearly ended his ride in a heap at the bottom. Crosswaite collected a five for the ride and spent over an hour repairing the damage, something that would haunt him for the remainder of the day. The long hillclimb sections were taking their toll in more than one way. Most of the riders had used four hours of the six-and-a-half-hour time limit to ride loop one, leaving them only an hour and a half to finish two more loops. After making his repairs, Crosswaite had less than one hour to finish. "We had a few problems that cost us a hell of a lot because we just couldn't make up the time," Crosswaite said. "It was just a nightmare. After fixin' the brake, I was goin' so fa~t that I got a flat on the loop, and we just couldn't make it up." Crosset would later end up having time-management problems of his own. He and Bell were tied after loop one with 11 points each, while Aaron sat in third, with 13. Sherco-mounted David Chaves of Spain had a good first loop, with 20 points, which put him in fourth place. The unfortunate Crosswaite sat in fifth, with 22. Bell immediately went into his time-management mode, quickly walking the second-loop sections and actually punching out of the difficult section number 12 to save time. Bell reproduced his first -loop score of 11 for his second time through, taking almost exactly the same dabs in the same sections. Bell is one of the most precise riders on the circuit, and once he finds his line, can reproduce it exactly, ride after ride. Aaron also duplicated his first lap with another thirteen. Crosset bettered his first lap, turning in a four, but was bogged down in traffic and kept getting farther behind on time. On the final loop, Crosswaite had only 26 minutes to finish, and punched out of five sections, hoping to avoid a DNF. Bell brought in a 10point final loop for a 32-point total, but could only wait for Crosset to arrive at the finish before he would know the outcome. Almost 30 minutes later, Crosset turned a six, giving him a total of 21, but he was also 23 minutes late, which earned him 11.5 penalty points. Bell had won the event by half a point; a mere 60 seconds. Aaron finished third, with 46. While Crosswaite and the Spaniard Chaves rounded out the top five, with 59 and 73 "Last weekend I was stressed out too much pressure, I guess," Bell said later. "These sections were more flowing and I definitely feel like I rode a hundred times better. We had to really pick up the pace on loop two." DAVTWD Geoff Aaron started Sunday's event off on the wrong foot when he three'd the easy opening section. The ERE/Gas Gas pilot must have used the mishap for motivation, because from that point on, he was nearly flawless. The only person riding better was Crosswaite, who refused to put his feet down and did so on the first loop only in the very difficult section number nine for a three - his only points of the loop. Aaron was second after one loop, dropping 10 points, with Bell one point back, in third. The young Floridian Chris Florin (Mon) was having an excellent day and sat in fourth, with 13, while Crosset suffered two fives on the loop and turned in a 19point card for fifth. Crosswaite had his only mental lapse of the day at the beginning of loop two, dropping a one and a two, but was able to get control of the situation and finish with a six-point loop. Aaron matched Crosswaite's six, while Bell posted a 13 and Florin moved into third, with a nine. "The first lap went really, really well, but my second lap I started off with a couple of stupid points," Crosswaite said after the event. "I went into the woods and had a good shoutin' and swearin' at myself, and I got myself ridin' good again. My last lap was as good as I've ridden in a long time, actually." Indeed, Crosswaite's final lap was a three - fourteen cleans and a three again on the slippery gully of section nine. With Crosswaite's 12-point total clearly untouchable, Aaron, Bell, Crosset and Florin waged a battle for the remaining spots. Aaron brought home a five-point final lap to wrap up the runner-up position, with a 21point total. Crosset finally got things together and posted a four-point last Ray Peters scales this tricky log section en route to a sixth-place finish. SENIOR 45: 1. Keith Adorns (25); 2. Wayne Galvin 39); 3. "Everything that could go wrong went wrong yesterday, and everything that could go right went right today," Crosswaite said after Sunday's win. "It swings 'round-about. Upcoming Rounds; Rounds 7 & 8 - Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico, August 25-26 Rounds 9 & 10 - Nenawka, Nebraska, September 1-2 BRIEFLY••• The New York event was the best·attended series event so far thiS year. Wlth 130 preentries and 142 actual participants. Clerk of the Course David Reed followed Rhode Island's lead and used the split-entry start system with great success. With the events seeing record numbers of entries, there has been talk of having separate loops or even separate events for the Champ riders, but the split-entry start system has handled the large entries with few problems. The AMA's Roger Ansel used Sunday's awards ceremony as an opportunity to announce the team that will represent the United States at this year's Trials des Nations in France on September 23. This year's squad will be a young one. With the exception of Geoff Aaron, who will be participating in his 11 th TdN, all of the members are first-timers. The team is as follows: Geoff Aaron, Jamul. California; Jesse Wellenstein, Elgin. indiana; Travis Fox, Montoursville, Pennsylvania; and Chris Florin, Grant. Florida. Andy Johnson of Nevada City, California, will be the US alternate. The U.S. Women's TdN squad will consist of Utah's Andrea Davis and former U.S. Women·s National Champ Laura Bussing of Tennessee. cue I e n e _ S • AUGUST 8. 2001 35
