AMAlChevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship Series Round 9: Washougal MX Park end. Ricky caught me - we were in lappers, but I still had it in me. I wasn't tired - he just caught me. I made a couple of little mistakes, he made a late-moto charge but being able to keep him behind me really said a lot for me." so I just pulled them off so I could see." The three leaders had built up such a large lead over the rest of the pack that Ferry was in no real danger of losing third place. "I thought about pulling over in the mechanics' area to get new goggles, but Lusk was staying a little too close, so I just rode the rest of the race with no goggles," Ferry said. With Ferry now out of the picture, Windham and Carmichael were left to battle it out between themselves. The two riders circulated the dust-free track nose-to-tail. At one point, Windham had built up roughly a twosecond lead, but as the race neared the finish, Carmichael stepped it back up and was right back on him. A few laps from the finish, Carmichael had whittled Windham's lead down to just 1.3 seconds. When the two rivals took the white flag, less than a second separated them. At this point, it was an all-out sprint-race to the finish, and as it turned out, Windham was - in this moto - just too much for Carmichael to han·dle. The Suzuki rider officially took the checkered flag 1.9 seconds ahead of Carmichael. "That was a good race," Carmichael said. "Kevin was riding good and hounding me, but he put it to me. I just have to go back, make some adjustments to the bike and see what we can do in the second moto." Windham was extremely happy with his confidence-inspiring win. "This was a great run for me," Windham said. "Unlike how it looks, the track is really slick, and you have to ride cautiously, which is hard to do when you have Carmichael beating on you. I just had to put my head down and do the best I could." The Windham/Carmichael battle wasn't the only race going on. Earlier in the race, Vuillemin had caught Lusk, bringing with him LaRocco and Roncada, making it a four-rider battle for fourth. Roncada was the rider to watch, as he put the move on LaRocco and then Vuillemin. On the last lap, the Chevy Trucks Kawasaki team rider was right behind Lusk but couldn't quite pull off the pass. Lusk ended up taking fourth (not too far behind the goggle-less Ferry), while Roncada had to settle for a close fifth. Right behind him finished LaRocco, who put a last-lap pass on Vuillemin. But the riders who certainly dominated the moto were Windham and Carmichael, who finished the race some 30 seconds ahead of Ferry, and 35 seconds ahead of Lusk. "The race went great," Windham said. "I'm typically known as a first10- and last-IO-minutes guy - the middle 10 are always my worst. My middle 10 were good in this moto; I got a little slow there towards the 28 AUGUST 8, 2001 • II: U II: • MOT02 Ferry started off the second moto with the holeshot, right in front of Carmichael, Windham and Vuillemin, who slipped by Windham before the first lap was over. But Windham wasn't going to sit in fourth for long, as he went back by Vuillemin heading into the second lap. Roncada completed the first lap in fifth, followed by Dowd, Lusk, Fast By Feracci/Husqvarna's Jason Thomas, Lewis and LaRocco. Missing from the fray was Tortelli, who opted to sit out the second moto due to his sore shoulder and concussion. Meanwhile, up front, Ferry was setting a fast pace, but Carmichael and Windham were able to answer, as they gradually pulled away from the rest of the pack. Ferry managed to hold on to the lead for five laps before Carmichael cut to the inside of him and motored around the four-stroke rider. Ferry's problems continued when Windham quickly closed in and passed him less than a lap later. "I got a good start, my first holeshot of the year," Ferry said. "I felt really good the first couple of laps, but Carmichael's pace and Windham's pace were just a little bit faster than me today. They were just on it today, riding good. Third was my spot today." When Windham passed Ferry for second, Carmichael held a lA-second lead, as they began the sixth lap. A lap later, it was down to 0.96 seconds. Windham was obviously on the move. Still, Carmichael wasn't going to give anything to Windham without a fight. The two riders went at it for many laps, never separated by more than a few bike-lengths. At one point, Carmichael and Windham crossed the finish-line area less than a half-second apart. As they diced, they were also pulling away from Ferry, who had dropped back to 10 seconds. Just before the halfway point, Windham got alongside of Carmichael and out-pulled him up one of Washougal's long uphills. "I was just trying to ride my own race," Carmichael said of Windham's pressure. "I was rust trying to give it 110 percent and not crack, and I didn't. He was just riding better than I was and taking a lot better lines." Once into the lead, Windham quickly put a two-second gap on the former leader and gradually opened up that gap to nearly four seconds before taking the checkered flag out n __ S _ in front, clinching his first overall outdoor victory since the 1999 season. "I was in third, Ricky was in second and Tim was out in front," Windham said. "I'm like, 'All right, all I've got to do is get Ricky.' For a second there, Ricky ran out a little bit, and Ferry was right there in the middle of me; I thought, 'Oh man, time for me to go now.' I got on them, and I had a lot of time. I knew it was just a matter of time to make a pass on him. After I passed him [Carmichael], I figured he'd stay with me, which he did. "All weekend, I've just been riding good and having fun," Windham added. "I couldn't even believe it halfway through the race I wasn't really thinking on the track, I wasn't thinking about my lines, I was just hitting them. I couldn't believe it. It was just one of those days when I was definitely clicking. Normally, I'm so focused on wh?lt's going on, [butl today I was just letting my mind at ease. I didn't have any arm fatigue, arm pump or anything. Man, it was just a great ride. Even though I was up there battling, I was in my own little world. It was great." Ferry again ended up finishing third all by' himself, but he knew that Vuillemin was close enough get him if he made a mistake. Finishing well back in fifth was LaRocco. Roncada held sixth for most of the race until getting a flat rear tire late in the moto. On the last lap, Lusk got Roncada to take that position. For the second moto in a row, Reynard finished eighth, followed by Dowd and Fast By Ferracci/Husqvarna's Travis Preston.
