Northern Cup Ser ies Round 2 : Pine Ridge Raceway (L e ft! Phil Gauthier won all four molos In the Masters Over 25 and Vet A Over 30 classes at Pine Ri d ge Raceway In Athelstane, Wisconsin. (RIght) Scott Blese of Fa ntasy Moto.com went 2-2 for second overall In the Masters Over 25 class at round two of the Northern Cup Series. ATHElSTANE,WI, MAY 27 om e 590 riders showed up to do battle at round two of th e North ern Cup Ser i es at Pin e Ridg e Rac ew ay . One o f them , 3 2-year- ol d Phil Gauthier, swept all fou r motos of the Over 2 5 Masters and Vet A O ver 30 c la sses. It w asn 't easy, as he w a s kept hon est by Scott B iese and David Rock in bo th cl asses. Gauthier us ed effe c t i ve sta rts to garn er t he two overalls and capture the li on's share of the purse. Wh en the gate dropped for the 18rider Vet fi eld, Yamaha -mounte d T im Bares hea ded to the fro nt of the pa ck, wi th Gauth ie r and Ma tthew Fra sch cl o se b eh ind . B ares q u ickl y pu lled out to a three- second lead by tri pli ng i n t o th e rhythm sectio n. Ga uth ie r d id n ' t , and he lo st so me gr ound . Bares had his YZ work ing hard down in th e v alley, bu t Gauthier had his cross hairs on the front -ru nn er. Upon com p leti ng th e fou rth lap , Gau th i er ha d Ba r es ri ght w h ere h e wanted h im . After Bares had crossed t h e p late au , h e see med to let off. Gauth ie r c h arged b y and l ed th e rema ini ng two laps. "He j ust kind of let me go by ," said Gauthier. "I th ink he was gett ing tired . Mayb e he has someth ing in store for the second moto. " " I really didn 't have enough left," Bares said , "a nd I figured I would set tle for second and try to get the win in the last moto." Gauthier posted the mota v ictory, with Bares second and Frasch th ird . Rod Mineau and Frank Weiss rounded out the top five . Gauthier snared the holeshot in the second Vet A moto, ahead of Suzuki jockey Rock and Bares. Gauth ier too k the secon d -m ota win and the overall . Weiss w en t 5 -3 fo r second , a nd Frasch went 3 -5 for third. T om Niel sen grabbed a mon ster holeshot off th e cem ent starting pad in the Masters Over 25 cla ss, ah ead of Scott Bi ese and Gauthier. The top three rid ers bolted out to the fr ont of the pack qu ick ly. Nielsen was chal lenged by Gauthier through the uphill section but was pel ted w ith sand blasting his tear-offs. Nielsen ran into some problems after completing th e first lap; His head p ipe broke loose , letting Gauthier and Biese ou t fron t. Nielsen pu lled off the track and went ba ck to the pits. M eanwh ile, Gauthier darted out to the lead, a he a d of B iese , who kept him honest, though his 125 was l o si n g some ground to Gauth i er ' s 250 . B iese sett led int o second , unc hall enged. Gau th ier took the mota w in , B iese w as sec ond and Jeff Erickson thir d. John St ewart put h is Honda at the fro nt in the second m ota, ahead of Gauthier, but Gauth ier quickly dispatched the CR ride r in the rhythm section. N ielsen suffered a poor start, unlike the fi rst moto, in which he pu lled a t w o- bi k e -I en g t h le ad o ff th e pad . G a u t h i e r m a de so me progres s through th e v a ll ey portion of the track , and Jame s Coons moved ahead of Stewart for second . Gauthier lo st some valua ble ti me before the end of th e fi rst la p, as Coons and his fo ur -stro ke c au gh t u p to t he leader. Ga u t h i er sensed t h e bike beh ind him and tripled into the secon d rh ythm secti o n, pu lling ahead of Coons . With B ies e i n the hunt , Gauthie r k new he had to w in the second mot o. Gauth ier checked out for the moto win. Biese moved into the ru nnet-up po sition on the last la p. Gauthier ended the da y with four im pressiv e m ot o w ins i n so me t ough classes. Biese we nt a consistent 2 -2 for secon d , an d Eric k son (3 -5) wa s third. Bernie Plummer nailed the 125 cc A holeshot. Behind him were round one w i nne r B r ad M o d jew sk i a n d Su zuk i j o c k ey Jesse Zambon. After turn two , Zambon wa s in the le ad. Plumm er fell back to th ird. Modj ewski w as all over Zambon , and he came out w ith the lead by the end of l ap on e. Modjewski pulled out to a threesecond lead. Plummer lost some ground to the early lead ers. Rock and Justin Ken dler were look ing to make a move for third. Kandler was a litt le too hard on the gas as he came off of the plateau and got cros s -rutted , h itt ing t h e ground wh ile runn ing fourth: he didn 't cue I r em o u n t. Modjews k i got the f irstmoto win over Zambon and Plummer. Jeremy Hackbarth m oved into fourth, ahead of Roc k. Plummer snared th e second -m ote h ol eshot , w i th Zam bon h an g ing it loo se on the outsid e. Zam bo n held on l on g enough to take the lead , w ith Plumm er cl o se b ehi n d . Modj ewsk i battl ed with Roc k for third. Modj ewski passed Plummer for second with one la p t o go and quickly pu lled up to Zambon , but Zam b on got the mota win by a b ik e length , ca ptu ri ng th e ov er all wi t h a 2 - 1 score .
