Ther e's no National Cha mp ionsh ip on t h e line , so take it easy, the y we re told, and the y all ag reed that th e y wou ld. Well, they lied. The 12 riders who participated in th e second run ning of th e Yam a ha Race of Champ ions d id e ve rythi ng bu t take it ea sy on the Glen Helen Raceway trac k. Just as k Ga ry J on es and Mike Bell, who came awa y from the event battered an d bro ken. All of thes e guys rac ed just as h ard this wee kend as they d id 10 , 20 o r 30 years ago when National a nd Sup ercross Championships we re on the line. After putting in four good, ha rdfought motos , former factory Team Yamaha rider J im Holley emerged as th is yea r's winner, topping defending YROC c ha m p Broc Glover b y j us t three po ints . Finishing third was two ti me 125cc Nationa l MX Champion Marty Smith. The YROC race, the bra inchild of Vintage Iron's Rick Doughty, features a four -m ot a forma t (two each da y), whe re riders compete o n ide ntica lly prepared Yamaha YZ MX bike s , rotatin g b etwe e n the YZ125 , YZ25 0F, YZ250 a nd YZ426 F each mota. And the ride r who acc um ulates the lowe st co m b ine d mota scores wins. There was plenty of close racing to go around, but perhaps the bes t race of the weekend ca me ea rly on . In the first moto , Holley came from behind to challen ge S m ith for the lead and win, and the two riders fou ght tooth and nail. After bumping elbows a coupie of times, Smith held on to take a ha lf-bikelength win over Holley. The second race got off to a rocky start when Mike Bell c rashed in the first turn , taking with him Gary Jones , Ma rk Barn ett, Kent Howerton and Ma rt y Moates. "I let him have the line and then he got rea lly sideways on acceleration and too k out my fro nt wheel , thro wing me to the ground. From there, I was just another obstacle on the course. Jimm y Holley came over right away to apo log ize for running me over; he had nowhere to go. As they s ay in NASCAR, it's just a rac in' de al." (Top) Wi nner .Jim Holley (.JHj leads Marty M oates (MM), Kent Howerton (KIt) and the rest of theYROC competitors Into the first tum.
