VA, JULY I e had the number-one plate; now he has a win to go with it. Arclight S uzu k i's Lee Ac re e won the 2000 Formu la USA Spo rtb ike title without winn ing a s ing le race. On a warm and windy day at Virginia Internation al Raceway, he made sure that in th is year's title chase he will have at le ast o n e v ictory o n the lis t b y hold ing off a determined Pa ul Ha rre ll at Virginia International Raceway . "It was a ba tt le a ll the way ," Ac ree said after earni ng the win th at mig ht hav e gone to his teammate , Brian Pa rriott. Pa rriott wa s one of the riders to c rash, th e list also includ ing Hoot ers Suzu ki 's Mike Cic cotto. Parri ott c a us ed his own crash in a roundabout fashion , but more on that later. Acree and Parriott were fast away at th e start, Zlock Racing's Michael Barnes th ird with Harrell fourth on the S hog un Moto rsports Yamaha R-6 . Acr ee was in the lead until the fourth lap, when Parri ott passed him , setting off a series of events that wou ld drop Ac re e back to fo urth . "T h e fi rs t b ig m istake I made , Bri an [Pe rrio tt ] went by me on the b rak e s going into one and t ha t la p com ing through thre e , trying to get back on him , I just gave it too much throttle , got it to buck, and it flipped th e tip- ove r sw itch ," Acree sa id. "So I had to shut it off and turn it ba ck on . On the ne xt la p, try ing to make up for that m istake, I just went wa y too deep into on e , cou ldn' t make it. So I ran off in turn on e , got it collected, got back on th e track." Parriott wa s o ut front with Har rell clo s ing . Making his wa y down th ro ugh the turn - 14 ro ller coaster on th e seventh lap , Parriott punted Stoltz Ra c ing 's William Stoltz off the track. H Iron ic a lly, it would also cost Parriott the race. "That caused my fate : Parriott said. "I hit him and that brought out the ambu lance. It allowed Lee [Acree] and [pa u l] Harrell to catch up . I ha d to pu s h ha rder. "l made a littl e mistake ente ring the last corner , entering it a little ea rly. Threw it in and the front end washed j ust because I was o ff-line and overleaned it," Parri ott added. With the ambulance on the track, there we re . a num be r of waving ye llo w s a n d th e r id er s b un ch e d up. When Parriott went out, it made it a rac e. Acree was th e ma in beneficiary . "It was really a big hold up ," Acree said. "When I got a round there I was about seven, eight bik e lengths back. At that po int, I knew I was still in the game." Not on ly in the game , but at the front of it by the II th of 18 laps. "Once I was able to get out front, I knew Paul [Harre ll] was going to set me up ," Acree said. "He's been doing it a long time; he knows how to do it. I just tried to be in th e wa y as much as I could and it worked out." " I pretty much checked every weakness he had," Harrell said. "I had h im pretty much set up for the end and there was three places I was going to get him and he blocked on every one. He did a great job. I wish I would have got him on th e last little bit there, but he just had me covered the whole way around. " "The last couple laps I just tried to make the Suzuki as wide as possible. For a little b ike , I mad e it pretty wide ," Acree sa id. When the ambu lan ce c le a re d out, s o did the lead ers , leavin g Barnes a lone in third . He w a s safe and happy , conside ring how sore his left
