Gary Rogers appeared to have the first semi tuck ed away when he slipped badly in turn two. F&S Harley-Davidson/ Larry Zumbr un's Sam Lowe was there to take advantage. and Lowe qualified for his first Grand National. ° My goal for the day was to make the podium on the SuperTracker , and just make the National. ° Lowe said . - I can't believe I did it in jusl my second ride on a 750 ." Jess Roeder (Las Vegas Harley-Davidson/Roederharley.com) and Nicky Hayden had probably the best race of the night in the second semi. The lead was repeatedly changed, sometime s two or three times a lap. Roeder was on the point when it counted and, for the second year in a row , Hayden missed the lima Half Mile main by one position. Gardner Racing's St eve Beattie held off Shaun Russell for the last tic ket into the main event. Mo' m oney: a group of Ohio Herley-Davidson Dealers got together and presented each heat wi nner and each semi winne r with checks for $500. Acc epting his check, Jess Roeder said, " You have no idea how much a bonus like this will help my program." Almost halfway ina the season. Chris Carr assumed the points lead with his win at lima. " l've never been more than twe lve points out of the lead. now I've won three in a row and I've only got a three -point lead: Carr said. " lt loo ks like it' s going to be a tight race, and that 's great . lt's good for the series, good for us as riders. It makes all the success more satisfying when if s close and hard-fought. Joe's doing a great job . He hasn't been out of the top five all year. That's the difference. I've finished fifth once and seventh once. That guy's riding good . W e ended up running a lot lower gear than we should have. W e needed two tee th off, but we thought we would be able' to run around the bottom and when that didn't happen. Running around the top gave us anot her eighth of a mile to go . We needed a twingl e. All week Morehead said they were going to dig it up. but the weather kinda messed that up. It was late and we had to keep rolling."
