Aaron Clark used his Aprilia Mille R to win the Unlimited GP race on a sweltering Sunday aftemoon at Firebird Raceway in Chandler. Arizona. Clark took control of the race from Larry Locklear on lap eight and pulled out a small lead to win the club's most prestigious event. "It's my first time here," explained the 29-year-old racer. "I like the track. and my bike is sweet around here. All that torque just pulls it out of the corners. I had a crash this moming when I tucked the front end in turn 10. but we got it all fixed." Clark's job was made a little easier when his teammate Mark Ledesma crashed out in turn 14 on lap four. "The rear end came around while I was off the gas," recounted Ledesma from his pit. "I stood it up and the front tire dug in so hard, it bent the rim." I 52 .JUlY 4. 2001 • cue • e Second· place finisher Larry Locklear had handling problems that kept him from mounting a stronger run at the fleeing Aprilia. "Something is wrong with the bike. but we just don't know what," said Locklear about his 1998 XZ9R after the race. "I had nothing for him when he came around me. Bot we will figure it out and be back next time." Third place in Unlimited GP went to R9ry Palmer on his GSXR750. The Mesa. Arizona. man finished 7.08 seconds behind Locklear. but Palmer had an uncharacteristically off weekend. claiming only one win in four tries. Palmer explained that he was happy with the bike after making changes to the front suspension on the advice of Dale Kieffer, but he just couldn't get the job done this weekend. A.J. Ammann claimed fourth place at the finish on his self-tuned R 1. Ammann had a rather uneventful race. finishing safely out of reach of fifth-place man Kieffer. n _ .... s Kieffer spent most of his race trying to get around the R1 of Lenny Beckman. In the end. it took him almost 10 laps to do it. and he succeeded only on the last lap in the last corner. "I got held up early in the race and I couldn't get around Beckman," said Kieffer. "I finally got him in the tower turn on the last lap." Kieffer was very pleased with his new GSX-R600. and. in addition to scoring fifth in Unlimited GP. he used it to good effect in the highly competitive Middleweight Supersport race as well. Kieffer turned a string of 1:08 laps in that race to take the win four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Robb Martin. Scott Jensen had an eventful weekend. starting off on Saturday. when he got into a battle with Locklear and Clark during the GTO race. The race was so good that spectators were still talking about it on Sunday moming. Jensen rode a GSX-R750 to claim third in that race, behind Clark and Locklear. Later. Jensen mounted a charge from third place to in the Unlimited Supersport race. Locklear led and Clark held second. but Jensen was coming up fast and he finally joined the leaders on lap seven. Unfortu· nately. his race came to an end two laps later with a crash in tum 10 that had the comers workers scurrying for cover as Jensen's bike slammed into their station. Jensen got an excellent start in the Unlimited GP race, but his front brakes locked up on the first lap as a result of damage from the earlier crash. He skidded for several dozen yards before finally coming to a stop. Jensen managed to keep it upright. .. F...... . . . . . , CIIMlIIer. anzIIIISds: May ZI-21. 2111 (..... 51 OIL S/SPT AM: I.
