Riders for Health, the international charity that was started by motorcyclists more than 12 years ago, was awarded the overall winner's accolade in the UK Charity Awards at a presentation at the Intercontinental Hotel in London, England, on June 21. The awards are organized by Charity Finance magazine and sponsored by the Leadership Trust and leading players from the financial services sector. Said Andrea Coleman, CEO (finance): "We are so proud of the recognition given to our teams in Africa. This award reflects the excellence of their achievements and just goes to show. once again, that given appropriate support. Africans can qUickly change the face of their continent for the better and forever. We should all be optimistic about the future of this great continent.- C r L 8 o o o [ c c ~ AMA Pro Racing has announced the addition of a new mile event to the National Hot Shoe Series schedule. The event will take place at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore. Oklahoma. on July 21, with opening ceremonies set for 1:30 p.m. The track is about 30 miles northeast of Tulsa on Route 44. Built in 1989, this Wide-open mile track went through major renovations four years ago and boasts some incredible racer-friendly amenities such as 300-400 recreational vehicle hook-up stations. This gives every race team access to electricity and wat~r right in the pit area, according to the AMA. And the fans will benefit from the glassenclosed grandstands and a restaurant that overlooks the track. "We have a great facility that is a cross between the Del Mar and Springfield Mile tracks.said promoter Jim Long. "The facility and surface are similar to Del Mar, while the layout of the track is almost identical to Springfield - wide and fast. - AMA Pro Racing officials Steve Morehead and Bruce Bober recenty inspected the track and tested the raceability of the surface. "Because this is a horse track. we had to scrape off the loose stuff and get down to the clay below, - said AMA flat track manager Bruce Bober. "After Steve [Morehead] put in two laps. we had a lot of rubber on the track. - "The track layout is near perfect. - said flat track operations manager Steve Morehead. ESPN and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb have announced the air dates and times for the 2001 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb telecasts. Each year. the Hill Climb in association with Marty Reid Enterprises of Indianapolis, Indiana, produces three separate shows - one for cars. one for trucks and the popular big rigs, and a third for the motorcycles, quads and sidecars. Reid, whose name has practically become synonymous with the Race to the Clouds. calls all the action from the mountain. The 2001 telecast schedule is as follows. The FIM International Jury, composed of Jan-Erik Sallqvist (Jury President). Bruno Comanducci (CMS Jury Member) and Andre Vantomme (FMNR Jury Member), convened in a telephone conference in order to judge the case of British rider Carl Nunn, whose fuel sample taken after the 250cc race of the Motocross World Championship's European Grand Prix held in Spa-Francorchamps. Belgium. on May 27. was found not in accordance with the FIM Technical Rules, Art. 63.01.2. with a lead content of 0.140 g/I and a MON value of 91.1, the maximum limit being respectively 0.005 g/I (lead) and 90 (MON). The International Jury deCided. as foreseen in the Motocross Rules, Art. 32.30.4. to exclude Nunn from the results of the 250cc race (he finished eighth). He must return his prize money and also pay for the cost of the fuel test. An appeal before the FIM International Disciplinary Court (CDI> may be lodged against this decision within five days from the receipt of the official notification. The Greater Atlanta British Motorcycle Association is sponsoring the 16th annual British in the Blue Ridge Rally, July 19-22. a family-oriented rally with vintage British motorcycles. Activities include a poker run, field events and a vintage bike show. The event will be held at the Bald Mountain Campground in Hiawassee. Georgia. For more information, call 770/414-4761. the Australian Outback. Beattie. who has not raced competitively since the 1997 Indonesian Grand Prix, will ride a factory-backed Honda XR650R in the event. Kevin Schwantz raced in the event last year. finishing 13th overall and winning a stage outright. Beattie says he will use Schwantz's performance as a yardstick to measure his own performance. Concerned Motorcyclists of New Jersey organization has worked with state Assemblyman Peter J. Biondi (RMorris, Somerset> to introduce AB3528. a measure that would increase penalties for drivers who injure or kill other road users. according to the AMA. The bill is modeled closely after the AMA's Motorcyclists Matter campaign launched earlier this year. The campaign addresses one of the root causes in a majority of car-motorcycle accidents car drivers who pull into the path of motorcyclists, leaVing the riders no escape from sometimes life·threatening, crash. Research shows that more than half of all car.motorcycle crashes are caused by other vehicles violating the right-of-way of a motorcyclist. Former Grand Prix road racer Daryl Beattie will compete in the Australian Safari, scheduled for August 19-26, in paign is designed to hold drivers accountable for the injUries they cause. AB-3528 would increase the penalties for a driver who is convicted of or pleads guilty to a charge of failing to yield right of way in an accident. The minimum penalty would be $200 and a 30-day dri· vers license suspension if the accident results in bodily injuries to another person. If the injuries are serious, the penalty would rise to a minimum of $500 plus a 90-day suspension. And if the driver's actions result in the death of another person, the minimum penalty would be a $1.000 fine plus a six-month suspension. The additional money raised by these increased fines would be deposited in the state's Motorcycle Safety Education Fund. where it would be used to train new motorcyclists in defensive-riding techniques.
