.. ~------------------------------------------------------, I 2001 I AMA 1 6 T H ANNUAL i i PACIFIC NOATHWEST CHAMPIONSHIP SEAlES i I @VAMAHA SAN C T , 0 NED JM Racing's Caleb Waller took the $50 Racedirect.com holeshot award in Sunday's first 250cc Expert moto. However, it wasn't long before Team GreenfThor rider Justin Smith was in the lead. He quickly established a blistering pace that included lap times as low as 1:52 around the long track. Behind him, Waller was quickly pulling away from third. This left EFR/CCRA rider Mark Gerloff to race with 'O'Neal/Maxima-sponsored Michael Keating. The two had the only battle on the track for a long time. On lap six, Keating passed Gerloff, taking over third with the field spread out. With the Expert lap times running under two minutes, the 20minute motos went 12 laps before the checkers fell. When they did, Smith had a large lead over Waller and Keating. Gerloff and Jeremy Ross rounded out the top five. In moto two, Smith picked up right where he finished the first one, this time picking up the $50 Racedirect.com holeshot money on his way to the first turn. Behind him, Waller and Keating were second and third, with Gerloff bringing up the tail of the three-rider pack. The three went around the track separated by only a few bike lengths, but soon Gerloff found himself fighting to keep up. Smith's lead continued to grow, getting as big as 25 seconds. At the checkered flag, it was Smith again, ahead of Waller and Keating, with Gerloff and Ross fourth and fifth, respectively. Zach Sayre took the holeshot in the first 125cc Novice moto. Michael Jacobs and Matt Ogrodowicz were left battling for second. Coming out of the pack, Bernardo Hidalgo passed Jacobs and set out after Ogrodowicz. Hidalgo passed Ogrodowicz and was soon challenging Sayre for the lead. Hidalgo passed the Husqvarna rider going into the woods and never looked back. Behind the leaders, Jacob Bederka was busy working his way into third, ahead of Jacobs. Bederka's charge continued into the second lap, passing Sayre for second. Jacobs was in an all-out war with Travis Daffern in what was probably the best race on the track. The two were side by side in every corner as they diced for fourth, but on the third lap they tangled in the air right before the white flag; Jacobs ended up on the ground, and Daffern crossed the line with Jacobs' bike attached to his. This bumped Ogrodowicz into fourth and Ricky Herron into fifth, where they would finish. Hidalgo won the first moto with a comfortable lead ahead of Bederka and Sayre. In the second moto, Hidalgo went straight into the lead, taking the holeshot ahead of Daffern and Ogrodowicz. Jacobs was back in fourth, battling with Sayre.
