Ko cher re bo u nded from her bad luc k ea rly in the moto and by mote's e nd s he found hers elf moving through the riders who had left on the fist gate. She passed every ride r in her class e xc ept th e hard -r iding Kayla Olson. Kocher had to settle for se c ond, wh ile O lson took the win . Rory Packwood finished third . Ra e m is c h took th e holeshot hon ors in moto tw o and qu ick ly put a gap on th e field , wh ich s he extended th e entire m oto . Garrett suffered a s lowe r start, but by the e nd of la p on e s he h ad m ov ed into seco nd pla ce . Longwe ll once agai n started out of the top five but m ove d up qu ickl y in moto two a nd with in a few short la ps sh e fo und he rse lf in thi rd place, with Garrett less tha n five seconds a head . Longw ell seeme d to settle int o h er pl a c e and didn 't make up mu c h groun d on Garrett , and w ithin two laps s he had the h a rd -c ha rg ing Bu rson o n her t ail. Lon g well put up a good fight fo r t he rema inde r of th e moto , but Burs on prove d to be too strong in the e nd a nd took th e fina l podium posit ion . When the se cond gate dropped fo r the Min i class, Koch er s na g ged th e h ol e shot , followed b y Olson and Ph illips . Ko ch er wanted to put th e moto away early a nd forget about her first -m oto pr ob lems . Th a t was a go od plan , but it was short-lived , a s s he had problems early on a nd le t Ols on get around for the lead. It wasn 't long b e fore Kocher was on the m ov e aga in, and with in a few sh ort laps sh e was within striking distance of Ols on . The battle for the lead lasted for severa l la p s , with Koch er eventually ov ertaking Olson with less than tw o la p s le ft in the rnoto. Olson didn 't want to let her slip a wa y , but s he had p rob lems of her own, a nd wh en s he wa s finall y ba c k on t rack, s he had slipped all the wa y ba ck to seventh . Koch er' s 2 - 1 finis h wa s good for the ov era ll. Pa c kwood we nt 3- 2 for s ec o n d, and J on es ' 4 -4 sco re was e no ug h to ta ke third o vera ll. CN not for the fact that full district mem bership is now requ isite , which might ha ve sca re d off a few of th e one-race a -ye a r c rowd. If so , th e absent riders mi s s ed two unique loops, the sec ond of which (a t 40 miles) included s ome tree -lined tra ils throu gh the trees (th e 33-mil e first loop was he ld on SVRA land in the va lley) . Breaking tra il on m inute one, Steve Hengeveld had troubl e s in the early parts of both loops. On the first one , he arr ived at the first special test (ha lf a mile off the start) before the che c ker s were prepared; on the second one (which sta rte d with a spe c ia l), he got wire stuc k in his rea r wheel a nd lost t wo m inu tes getting u n t a n g led . He bounced back to perform well on a long (a bout 10 miles) special test on whooped-out , tree -lined single-track, despite the dis a d va nta ge of a heavy Honda XR650 R - so we ll, in fact, that he took the overall. "A s fo r the race itself, it was good," He n g e ve ld said. "T h e onl y thing I thought was gnarl y was the two -way tra ffic from all of the we eke nd warriors ." Also experi en cing troubles right off the start wa s D37 e nd u ro a ce Rick Daniels , who had troubl e firing up his big Yamaha thumper a nd didn 't leave th e start with in th e pres c ribed 60 s e c onds . Dan ie ls had reportedl y rej etted the bike on Saturday a nd ina d ve rte nt ly left the choke on ; unfortunatel y , with the knob hidden behind the la rg e a ftermarket ta nk , the problem did not get diagnosed befor e t he ra c e st arted, but he fixed it and re bounde d for fifth o ve ra ll. As fo r Pau l Krause , h is prim ary p rob le m was se lf - inflic ted , a s he post- e nte re d th e event and was stuck ba ck on m inu t e 78 - behind t raffi c a nd blin ded by thi ck dust. Thi s was com pounded by the fact that he wa s runn ing an 89 -dBa silencer to pass the ev ent's sou nd te st , making it ha rd er fo r th e s lowe r ride rs to hear him approaching . Be ing a n optimist, Kr ause touted th e "stea lt h " p ipe 's ability to m a ke his KTM 520 hook up on th e s lick gr ou nd . "Once th ey rea lized I wa s beh ind them , everyon e moved over quickly ," h e in s is t e d . " O h , yea h , and how ab out riding through th e fi e ld s of flowe rs ? One ride r who experienced mi nimum pr ob lem s wa s It al ian Lu c a Trussardi , who fini shed a close s ec o nd overall on his TM despite being he ld up by this reporter in the final special test.
