The ova l was prepped as a cushion track, but after a while it began to develop a ha rd-packed su rface . As the evening became cooler, the moisture from watering the track worked its wa y to the s urfa ce, making all the bik e s hook up a s t h ey acc e le rate d o ut of the turns. Like la st year's eve nt, m any fairg oers we re drawn t o t he a re n a b y th e ro a r of moto rcycl es ra cing o n the tra ck. Even th ou gh th is wa s a n AHRMA Vintag e event, no n-Vintage ra ce bikes were a lso allowed to race in th eir own c lass . By comparis on , those newer and mor e m od ern b ikes did not seem to go a ny fa s ter than th e o lder-v in- " ta ge bike s. With a holeshot a t the first turn , Brad stayed in the groove , making a ny chance of a pa ss next to impossible for Rod . In the non -AHRMA Open Pro class, Lonni e Paul e y, riding his ye llow Rotax bike, dom inated th e race fro m start to finish . Randy Bereman a nd Antho ny Giammanco we re wag ing a battle for second. La ppe rs became a factor, but Be r e m a n prevailed , e dging o u t Gia m m a n c o at the che c k ers. Clay Cham bers finished fourth , with Jason Chisum rounding out th e top five. Lessley was now under pressure from Honda rider Ed Coffee in a scrap for fou rth, with a tight string of ride rs close be hind . At the ha lfwa y poi nt of the 10-lap race , Hopfe was three seconds clear of Sellers, but two laps late r the Kern KTM/Digg e r/Team Babo -s p on so red rider was o n th e charge a nd closing in fast.
